Questions to discuss or consider further:
1) Have you ever felt truly amazed at something God did in your life? What impact did that have on your devotion to following Jesus?
2) Read Simon’s story in Luke 5:1–11. Does his reaction in verse 8 surprise you? Why or why not?
3) Simon Peter was a career fisherman, Jesus was not, and yet when Jesus told Peter what to do to catch fish, he obeyed and discovered the joy of submitting to Jesus’s authority over his life. What might it look like for you to grant Jesus authority over your life?
4) Read Luke 5:12–16. When you go to Jesus for help, do you sometimes feel timid like the leper? Do you give Jesus an out in case he doesn’t answer you the way you want him to? How can we pray boldly and transparently, while still respecting that he will ultimately do what is his good will for us?
5) Read Luke 5:17–26. What do you see in this story that demonstrates how Jesus amazed people to draw them towards an even more significant understanding of him?
6) Are we filled with awe when Jesus intervenes in people’s lives to forgive their sins and transform their lives? If not, what could we learn from this story that might help us to see and celebrate this “miracle” more clearly?
7) Read Luke 5:27–28. What do you wish you could ask Levi about what compelled him to get up and leave everything behind when Jesus simply said, “Follow me.”? What would it take for you to respond like that?
