Ep. 71 - Navigating Life as a Biracial and Bicultural Latina with Invisible Illness with Talia Miele
Manage episode 267262587 series 2431533
Today’s episode is a gooooooood one. I was so happy to have Talie Miele on my podcast to talk about her life with fibromyalgia, but our conversation took a turn to focus on current events around racism. Talia is a biracial and bicultural Latina woman, so we talked about how that affected her as a woman AND as a person living with a chronic illness.
This podcast was eye-opening to me in SO many ways and I’m forever grateful for Talia for being so open to discuss the implicit and explicit bias and racism in this world. We talk about racism, ableism and her life experience with both. We also talked about becoming an advocate for yourself with chronic illness and what is available to you. I know you’re going to love this episode and you’ll learn so so much!
In today’s episode we chat about:
Talia's takes us through living with Primary Juvenile Fibromyalgia, what that is and how she’s dealt with it throughout her life
Talia's story as a biracial and bicultural Latina woman living with chronic illness
When implicit bias becomes explicit bias
Jessie's learnings with her own privilege and what she's started learning during the Black Lives Matter movement
Color blindness vs. color acceptance
How race effects those within the chronic illness community
The privilege of finding a doctor that works for you
Becoming your own advocate and how to invest in yourselves while living with invisible illness
Links and things…
