The November 2024 Regular School Board meeting opened with the swearing-in of new School Board member Anne Sherwood. Sherwood was elected unopposed on November 5 to complete the term of former member David Ortiz, who recently relocated. We’re excited to welcome her to the team as she begins her service to the FCCPS community.

Additional highlights from the meeting included:

  • FY25 Budget Amendment: The Board approved a budget amendment to address key projects through one-time funding, including:

    • Two new electric buses as part of FCCPS’s sustainability initiatives.

    • Stadium field house upgrades.

    • Literacy intervention materials for grades K-8, in alignment with Virginia’s updated literacy standards.

    • Infrastructure improvements like LED gym lighting at MEHMS, updated security cameras, and hybrid vans for student transport.

  • Enrollment Projections: FCCPS presented updated enrollment projections, with attention to the impact of new housing developments on future enrollment numbers. This information is crucial for planning resources, staffing, and facility needs.

  • 2025 Legislative Priorities: The Board discussed legislative priorities for the upcoming General Assembly session, advocating for increased funding for K-12 education, competitive teacher pay, mental health resources for students, and enhanced support for English Learner programs.
