This is an incredible episode of the "Focus on Business" podcast show that I recently recorded with the amazing Amber Henry. Amber is a wedding and portrait photographer with nearly 20 years of experience, and she also mentors and educates other photographers. Her insights are pure gold!
In our chat, Amber walks us through her journey from starting at a portrait chain studio to running her own successful wedding photography business. She talks about how she transitioned from high-volume portrait work to the exciting and unpredictable world of weddings. Amber’s flash photography skills are top-notch, and her sales expertise is something every photographer should take notes on.
We delved deep into the business side of photography, which is so crucial for sustaining a successful career. Amber shared how her early experiences taught her the importance of sales, and we both emphasized how vital it is to understand your pricing structure and value your work appropriately. We talked about outsourcing tasks you’re not great at and managing client relationships—essentially, all the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our businesses running smoothly.
One of the most insightful parts of our conversation was about handling the seasonal nature of our work. Amber has a great payment structure for weddings that ensures she has a steady income throughout the year. She also shared some hilarious and awkward wedding stories, including one about a priest who kept asking if the bride and groom were related and mentioning the “marital bed” repeatedly—so awkward but so funny in retrospect!
We also talked about the importance of setting boundaries with clients and knowing when to say no. Amber’s had her share of challenging clients, and she’s learned to spot red flags early on. She emphasizes the need to protect your time and energy to keep your passion for photography alive.
Amber invited everyone to follow her on social media and join her Facebook group, "Females Who Flash." It’s a supportive community for female photographers to share their experiences and get advice without any judgment or negativity.
This episode is packed with practical advice and relatable stories, making it a must-listen for any photographer looking to thrive in both the art and business of photography. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend giving it a listen!
