Main Idea: We live in such a busy type of society where we unknowingly rush through time even though time itself is the most valuable thing that we have in this world. Even in times like the holidays or special occasions, they seem to go by in the blink of an eye. Memories are one of the most precious things that we have yet in the moments that they’re experienced, we don’t recognize how special they are.

Today, we’re going to talk about living in the present. We’re going to use the life of Mary from scripture to understand valuable intrinsic lessons about appreciating time. We’re going to talk about not letting worry steal your peace the moments you’re living in. We’re going to unpack the reality of how temporary the present is in regard to the future. And we’re going to learn how to appreciate the seemingly ordinary moments that we have now.

The reason that this is so important to talk about is because life passes by quicker than anyone anticipates. If we don’t learn how to slow down to appreciate the present, we will be full of regrets at the end of our lives. While everyone has seasons of being too busy, the best way to go through life is simply learning how to live in the present even in the busyness.

1. Unnecessary Distractions [NOTHING IS MORE VALUABLE THAN THE PRESENT TIME]

We have grown so accustomed to being distracted in our days that we often neglect years of our lives and give it all up to wasted time. The terrible thing is that most times we don’t realize what we truly had until it’s gone. Whether it’s time spent with our kids or our parents, or whether it’s time in our youth or time to ourselves. We have sacrificed it all for the sake of being distracted or too busy. Every single day, hour, minute and second that passes by is time that we will never get back. We need to learn how to wake up and live in the present moment.

(Luke 10:38-42)

2. Unknown Tomorrow [TOMORROW ISN’T PROMISED, SO ENJOY THE PRESENT MOMENTS]

A lot of things in life seem like they will never necessarily change. Or the thought of certain things changing seems too grand for us to imagine so we just settle to not acknowledge it. But the sometimes harsh reality is that everything will eventually change. Sometimes for the better and sometimes in a way that causes us remorse. This is another reason why we have to learn how to appreciate the present moments that we live in.

(John 11:1-3)

3. Unexpectedly Special [SOME OF THE MOST SPECIAL MOMENTS IN LIFE ARE THE ORDINARY ONES]

Our time is limited, and I think the most valuable thing that we can take away from that is to look for special opportunities to make ordinary moments seem extraordinary. You don’t have to wait for something seemingly significant to happen to create a special memory. All it takes is slowing down and paying attention to the present.

(John 12:1-8; Matthew 6:33-34)
