001: Jordan Stephens
Manage episode 435253252 series 3594317
Welcome to Immigrant Island.
We couldn't have asked for a better guest to launch Immigrant Island Dubplates - Jordan Stephens has done the lot.
So we listened to his favourite music, heard some incredible stories, and presented him a very special gift. There may have been tears.
Jordan has been a chart-topping rapper with Rizzle Kicks, best-selling author, poet, actor (inc Star Wars: Rogue One), TV presenter and mental health campaigner. The multi-hyphenate creative guides us through his impeccable 'desert island' selection - spanning Lauryn Hill to The Streets via Radiohead - with profound personal tales, childhood memories and industry misadventures.
Jordan is a rare beast - an unfiltered, funny and brutally honest guest who speaks openly of drug addiction, social anxiety, ADHD, bullying and toxic masculinity. And how music helped overcome many of these challenges. In true 'Immigrant Island'-style, Jordan is also an inspiring force for positive social change - launching major mental health campaign #IAMWHOLE (which was mentioned in the Houses of Parliament). His highly-anticipated autobiography 'Avoidance, Drugs, Heartbreak and Dogs' is out on 22 Aug 2024.
Imagine each 'Immigrant Island Dubplates' episode as one of those small boats crossing the Channel - carrying change-makers, entrepreneurs, poets, musicians, charity founders, festival pioneers, activists and community leaders. Now more than ever, its time to spotlight the unsung heroes that make this strange island of Britain, Great - powered by intimate stories of immigration, identity and subcultures.
Lyrix Organix reimagines a certain legendary radio show for a new generation, inviting one very special guest to select records to take with them to their desert island.
The twist? One of our guests' track selections, re-recorded as a 'special' by the original vocalist, pressed as a one-off dubplate and presented in front of a live audience.
The show was recorded live at Roundhouse in North London for Last Word Festival 2023.
