Unpacking the arguments for and against Measure R in the Central Valley. Why Republican registration is ticking up among California voters. Finally, Sacramento artist Uli Smith’s new exhibit "be/long/ing" at Sac State.

Mandatory Drug Treatment Under Measure R

A measure on the ballot in the Central Valley is raising a debate about welfare and drug screening. Known as Measure R, the initiative would require people who receive general assistance benefits and are suspected of having substance abuse disorders to undergo mandatory drug screening and treatment. Marijke Rowland, Senior Health Equity Reporter at the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative joins Insight to break down the arguments opposing and supporting Measure R, and why punitive approaches to combat substance abuse have been gaining popularity.

A ‘Reddening’ Shift in CA Voters

A new report from the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California has found a subtle shift in California’s voter base, particularly among big Democratic constituencies like Latino, Black, and young voters. Recent data shows an increase in Republican registration compared to 2022, and slight declines in Democratic or No Party Preference registrations. PPIC researcher Eric McGhee breaks down the factors behind this shift, and political consultants Robin Swanson and Mike Madrid talk about the larger implications of this slight reddening in California.

Uli Smith’s Exhibit ‘be/long/ing’

Sacramento’s Uli Smith uses bold colors in her work, creating vibrant visual pieces that light up the streets and office buildings where many of her works reside. Smith is embarking on a new project, one that’s a little bit different from her time painting murals around town. “be/long/ing” is Smith’s new solo exhibit at Sac State. The exhibition explores the complexities of ancestral culture, identity and belonging. There’s an opening reception this Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the University Union Gallery.
