When one thinks of an international container port, it conjures the image of a city along the ocean. But Ports of Indiana CEO Jody Peacock tells us why a Midwest state 500 miles away from the nearest one can still handle ocean cargo. On our latest episode, Jody explains the Indiana Container Initiative, which involves plans to make the Ports of Indiana a potential origin and destination for ocean containers directly over water between the U.S. and Europe.
He tells us the added value of adding containers to Indiana's ports (which include Burns Harbor on Lake Michigan, as well as Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon on the Ohio River), what the ports currently import and export - including agriculture and steel, the importance of access to multiple transportation modes, from ships to trucks to trains - and even river barges. Plus, he explains how sustainability and convenience factor in to using Indiana's ports. And he takes us through the route - and the lock system - that allow ocean vessels to make it deep into the U.S.
