Cobb Lawmakers, Business Leaders Rally Against 30-Year Transit Tax

In Marietta, Republican lawmakers and business leaders rallied against Cobb County's proposed 30-year transit tax, the Mobility Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (M-SPLOST), which aims to raise $11 billion for transit improvements. Critics, including LOUD Security Systems President John Loud and other former Cobb Chamber of Commerce chairs, argue the tax represents the largest increase in Cobb's history and could lead to "SPLOST fatigue," affecting future tax extensions. They claim the tax would harm businesses and isn't justified by the county's population density. Republican state representatives and senators also voiced opposition, citing concerns over economic impact and inefficacy of mass transit in Georgia. Despite the 2018 bipartisan support for House Bill 930, which enabled the tax proposal, some lawmakers now regret their votes. Proponents argue the tax is necessary for accommodating growth and improving transportation, while opponents suggest focusing on road improvements and remote work to address traffic issues.
