Hello, this is Jeff Bass, the host of Overlooked Headlines. In this episode, we delved into some critical headlines that have been overlooked in the news cycle.

We started by discussing Congress quietly moving to automatically register men for selective service in the event of a draft. This amendment aims to streamline the registration process for eligible men and ensure fairness in case a military draft is declared. The amendment, sponsored by Representatives Christy Houlihan and Don Bacon, is seen as a money-saving and common-sense reform. The Selective Service System costs roughly $30 million a year, and this automation proposal is a step towards modernizing the system. The bill still needs to pass through the full house and Senate before becoming law.

Next, we highlighted the alarming trend of fire hydrants being stolen in Los Angeles. The Golden State Water Company has reported a significant increase in thefts, with over 300 hydrants stolen since the beginning of 2023, amounting to a loss of $1.2 million. The company has taken measures to prevent further thefts, including installing locked shields on hydrants. The thefts pose a significant public safety risk, and the company is urging the thieves to stop tampering with fire hydrants, as it is a federal crime.

Lastly, we discussed the growing number of college students being diagnosed with PTSD due to COVID lockdowns. The rate of college students diagnosed with PTSD doubled from 2017 to 2022, with the biggest jump occurring during the COVID-19 years. The study conducted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham highlighted the need for targeted trauma-informed prevention and intervention strategies to support affected students. The lockdowns and social distancing mandates during the pandemic have taken a toll on the mental health of college students, leading to an increase in PTSD cases.

In our segment "His Lines," we reflected on these headlines from a biblical perspective, citing verses from 2 Timothy and Matthew that speak to the challenges and trials faced in the last days. The message emphasized the importance of trusting in Jesus and remaining faithful in times of turmoil.

Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Overlooked Headlines. Stay informed, stay inspired, and remember to keep your faith in God as we navigate through the headlines of today. Be blessed.
