Lesson 1

• 宿題 (shu-ku-dai) = homework (しゅくだい) - [pronounced (sh-ku-da-i)]
• もう (mo-u) = already
• もうすぐ (mou-su-gu) = soon
• まだ = still [for positive phrases]; still not / not yet [for negative phrases]
• よく(yo-ku) = well
• 始まる (haji-ma-ru) = (1) to begin; to start; to commence (v5r, vi) (はじまる)
• 始まります (ha-ji-ma-ri-ma-su) = it is starting/it starts/begins (はじまります)
• 始まっています (ha-ji-ma-tte-i-ma-su) = it has started/begun (はじまっています)
• 始まっていません (ha-ji-ma-tte-i-ma-se-n) = it has not started/begun (はじまっていません)

• 授業 (ju-gyou) = class/lesson (じゅぎょう)
• 始まっていますか？(ha-ji-ma-tte-i-ma-su-ka) = has it started/begun? (はじまっていますか)
• 終わる (o-wa-ru) = to finish; to (come to an) end; to end; to close (v5r, vi, aux-v) (P) (おわる)
• 終わって (o-wa-tte) = it has ended/finshed (おわって)
• 終わりました (o-wa-ri-ma-shi-ta) = it ended/finished (おわりました)
• 終わりましたか？(o-wa-ri-ma-shi-ta-ka) = did it end/finish? (おわりましたか)
• 終わっていません (o-wa-tte-i-ma-se-n) = it has not ended/finished

• 科 (ka) = grade (か)
• 教科書 (kyou-ka-sho) = textbook/textbooks (きょうかしょ)
• 難しい (mu-zu-ka-shii) = hard/difficult (むずかしい)
• 難しいです (mu-zu-ka-shii-de-su) = it is hard/difficult (むずかしいです)
• 難しくないです (mu-zu-ka-shi-ku-nai-de-su) = it is not hard/difficult (むずかしくないです)
• 難しくないですか？(mu-zu-ka-shi-ku-nai-de-su-ka) = isn't it hard/difficult? (むずかしくないですか)
• 易しい (ya-sa-shii) = easy (やさしい)
• 易しいですか？(ya-sa-shii-de-su-ka) = is it easy? (やさしいですか)
• 易しくないです (ya-sa-shi-ku-nai-de-su) = it is not easy (やさしくないです)
• テスト (te-su-to) = test/tests, exam/exams
• 全然 (zen-zen) = not at all

• 字 (ji) = a letter/character (じ)
• 漢字 (kan-ji) = kanji, Chinese Characters (かんじ)
• こう (kou) = like this/in this way
• どう (dou) = how (about)
• どうでしたか？(dou-de-shi-ta-ka) = how was it?
• はいけません (wa-i-ke-ma-sen) = you cannot/you are not allowed to
• 帰る (kae-ru) = to go home; return (to origin); to come home; to go back (かえる)
• 帰ってはいけません (kae-tte-wa-i-ke-ma-sen) = you cannot go home (かえってはいけません)
• 見る (mi-ru) = to see; to look; to watch; to view (みる)
• 見て (mi-te) = I watched/look at (みて)
• 見ていいですか？(mi-te-ii-de-su-ka) = can/may I look at? (みていいですか)
• 見てはいけません (mi-te-wa-i-ke-ma-sen) = you cannot/may not look at (みてはいけません)
• これを見て (ko-re-wo-mi-te) = look at this (これをみて)
• 寝る (ne-ru) = to sleep (lying down); to go to bed; to lie in bed (ねる)
• 寝ました (ne-ma-shi-ta) = I went to sleep (ねました)
• 書く (ka-ku) = to write; to compose; to pen (かく)
• 書いてください (kai-te-ku-da-saI) = please write it (かいてください)
• どう書きますか？(dou-ka-ki-ma-su-ka) = how do you write it? (どうかきますか)

• 葉 (ha) = leaf (は)
• 言葉 (ko-to-ba) = word (ことば)
• 意味 (i-mi) = meaning/meanings (いみ)
• 覚える (obo-e-ru) = (1) to remember; to memorize; (...) (v1, vt) (おぼえる)
• 覚えて (o-bo-e-te) = remember/memorize (おぼえて)
• 覚えてください (o-bo-e-te-ku-da-sai) = please remember/memorize (おぼえてください)
• 覚えていますか？(o-bo-e-te-i-ma-su-ka) = do you remember? (おぼえていますか)
• 覚えていません (o-bo-e-te-i-ma-sen) = I don't remember (おぼえていません)
• 覚えました (o-bo-e-ma-shi-ta) = I remembered/memorized (おぼえました)
• 覚えましょう (o-bo-e-ma-shou) = let's remember/memorize (おぼえましょう)

• 教える (oshi-e-ru) = to teach; to tell; to inform; to instruct (おしえる)
• 教えて (o-shi-e-te) = tell/teach me (おしえて)
• 教えてください (o-shi-e-te-ku-da-sai) = please tell/teach me (おしえてください)
• 教えて欲しいです (o-shi-e-te-ho-shii-de-su) = I want you to tell/teach me
• 辞書 (ji-sho) = dictionary (じしょ)
• 引く (hi-ku) = (8) to look up (in a dictionary, phone book, etc.); to consult; (...) (v5k, vt) (ひく)
• 引きます (hi-ki-ma-su) = I will consult/look up in (a dictionary) (ひきます)
• 引いてはいけません (hii-te-wa-i-ke-ma-sen) = you are not allowed to use (a dictionary) (ひいてはいけません)
• 引いてください (hii-te-ku-da-sai) = please consult (a dictionary) (ひいてください)
