Sam and Frodo reach Mount Doom while war rages at the Black Gate... though that war seems mostly concerned with protecting a Frodo effigy, for some reason.
Unlike the Peter Jackson trilogy, which has basically an entire normal-length movie left to go after the good guys win, this one wraps up ALARMINGLY quickly, to the point where your head is left spinning, wondering if there was a time jump you missed!
