Recent legal filings and reports have revealed that Jeffrey Epstein attempted to influence the sex offender laws in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Specifically, it is alleged that in 2011, Epstein was consulted by Cecile de Jongh, the then-first lady of the Virgin Islands, regarding changes to the territory's sex offender legislation. De Jongh reportedly asked Epstein for his input on the wording of the law, suggesting that the revisions be tailored to his preferences. Epstein provided feedback, aiming to limit transparency and ensure his continued freedom of movement, including the ability to leave the islands for short trips without drawing attention to his whereabouts.
Epstein's influence reportedly extended beyond legislation, as he was known to have close relationships with high-ranking officials in the Virgin Islands government. In return for financial contributions and other favors, these officials allegedly shielded Epstein from scrutiny, enabling him to continue his criminal activities without interference. Epstein is said to have provided funds to local politicians, arranged visas for his victims, and even helped former Governor John de Jongh settle a criminal case.
This manipulation of the legal system in the Virgin Islands is part of a broader conspiracy that allowed Epstein to maintain his sex-trafficking operation for nearly two decades. These revelations have come to light in the ongoing legal battles involving Epstein’s estate and JPMorgan Chase, with claims that both the bank and the Virgin Islands government played roles in facilitating his crimes.
