In this episode, we hear from JL Adolph - a fatherless father, father advocate, and connoisseur of Hip Hop music. We hear from JL about how he was able to navigate a trauma-filled upbringing with the help of pop culture, comic books, the lyrics, stories, and scenes told through hip hop artists of the time, and with the help of a few key male figures who dared to show him love. In fact, hip hop and poetic expression were, in many ways, his salvation which gave him the outlets to express his feelings and deal with his past. We also dive into how he was able, through these artistic expressions, to put together the fragments of what fatherhood means.
A St. Louis native, current college professor of English, and host of the YouTube show The Dad Cypher. The Dad Cypher is JL's amazingly insightful and entertaining chronicle and Hip Hop guide to fatherhood. His story is an inspirational one and he shares with us his learnings and offers brilliant advice for those that may be struggling or dealing with challenges around their ability to step up and show up as fathers.
