Geoff Thomas: The Holy Spirit – Chapter 17: “The sealing of the Holy Spirit”
Opening verses: Ephesians 1:11-13
A Christian is not a loner. Our family, friendships, leisure time, home, and money, indeed everything about us, is inseparably linked to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Savior affects everything in the lives of His people. In Ephesians 1:13, Paul tells us the Christian is included in Christ. According to our text, three things must happen for that to be true. Pg 189 You hear the word of truth. Before you can be included in Christ, you must hear this truth. If you want to hear this truth proclaimed, you must go to a church that explains the Bible and the consequences of applying its words to your life. Romans 10:13-15 You believe what you hear. You must trust the message about Jesus Christ and entrust yourself to Him. 2 Corinthians 6:16, Ephesians 3:16-17 Upper Room discourse You are sealed with the Holy Spirit
Prophets such as Ezekiel and Joel promised that the Holy Spirit would one day be poured out on every person who believed. Since the day of Pentecost, the Spirit has come upon every Christian. We are born into new life in Christ by the Spirit of God. That is why we believe that God’s Word is true. That is why we entrust
ourselves to Jesus Christ and are included in Him. The Holy Spirit seals our belief that we belong to God. Pg. 190

So in our text the sealing of the Spirit is a guarantee that men and women believers are joined to the Lord Jesus Christ. The gift of the Holy Spirit authenticated that these people were the beneficiaries of God’s union with them
through His dear Son. The seal proved they were forgiven sinners, not because they noisily claimed that but because the Spirit of God affirmed this truth. His presence in them affirmed that they believed in God. Pg. 193-194
4. There are several ways to know that we have the seal of the indwelling of the Spirit: The Holy Spirit ministers to me. The fruit of the Spirit is evident in my life. Galatians 5:22–23 I know the blessing of the Spirit I see the Spirit’s leading in my life
