Welcome to the second episode of our Myofascial Magic strand! I recently co-founded Myofascial Magic In Action with the esteemed Paul Thornley, with the mission of providing practitioners with client-centred micro-movement keys. And now we're bringing you our shared passion - and the answer to some of your burning questions - in the form of this special joint podcast series, releasing every couple of weeks.
In this episode we talk about one of the most fundamental movements of most of our lives - WALKING... Fifteen years ago Monty Python did a sketch called The Ministry of Silly Walks. It was hilarious (look it up on YouTube for a giggle!). But the truth is, that we all have a walking pattern that may or may not serve us as well as it could. Have you watched animals walking? Have you noticed that different people often mimic different animals? Like Penguins (that tend to rock and shuffle), or Bears (who have an ipsilateral swing) or Flamingos, that spiral-lift one foot after the other. It’s fascinating.
A great deal of the biomechanical information out there about “correct walking gait” focuses on foot placement and toe-heel relationships. It measures things like stride length and all sorts of metrics that prove pretty meaningless in practice. They fail us miserably when we just want to be able to move well and BONUS – actually receive energy from walking, rather than lose it. YES – that is possible.
In this episode Paul tells a gorgeous story from his army days and how cleverly walking was understood so that a unit of soldiers (of all different heights, sizes and abilities) could all walk in sync and arrive at the same time. What actually happens when we recognise how the Pelvic Foot works? How do we release rebound energy? And even give it back to the body? Listen in as we explore it all!
We hope you get a lot out of this conversation,
thank you for being here,
Joanne and Paul
