Undoubtedly, the topic of postpartum mental health remains inadequately addressed, yet it is a reality that countless new mothers face the daunting challenge of postpartum blues, depression, or mood disorders. The distinction between postpartum mood disorder and fleeting blues or depression cannot be overstated, underscoring the necessity for expectant mothers to establish a robust safety net through a reliable support system. While healthcare professionals, doulas, and spouses naturally extend unwavering support to new mothers, it is imperative that we remain vigilant for persistently abnormal behavior and foster an environment of open dialogue. By doing so, we can truly prioritize the well-being of new mothers and ensure their smooth transition into this demanding phase of life. Discussing this topic on today's show with Yamel is Ayana.
Ayana Lage is a lifestyle blogger, podcaster, freelance writer, and influencer. She started her blog, Ayana Lage, during a time of uncertainty, and continued sharing her pregnancy, motherhood, and mental health experiences with her audience. Ayana also hosts the weekly podcast, Asked By Ayana, where she sits down with talented creatives for a casual conversation about their career journey.

Ayana’s Journey
Ayana's motherhood journey has been a rollercoaster. Despite thorough planning for her daughter's birth, she hadn't anticipated the challenges of her postpartum period. While she expected postpartum depression, the surprise came in the form of anxiety and rage, rarely discussed topics. Ayana's emotional state fluctuated wildly after her C-section, experiencing euphoria, painlessness, paranoia, hallucinations, and anxiety. Recognizing something was wrong, her husband, doula, parents, and psychiatrist hesitated to hospitalize her due to COVID. However, Ayana's desperate pleas and self-harm threats led to her admission to the hospital. After weeks of battling psychosis, she began her journey back home.

Postpartum Planning
Postpartum planning often takes a backseat due to the alarming tales of new mothers spiraling into darkness, causing harm to themselves or their children. While cases like Ayana's can be rare, it's important for partners to know each other's baseline behaviors and build a support team. 1 in 5 women experience postpartum mood disorders regardless of age or social class. While the triggers for such conditions vary, adequate sleep is vital for the well-being of all new parents.

For Those In Need of Extra Understanding
Tell your support system to be on the lookout for warning signs, even if they don't fully understand. Let them know your habits and feelings for better care.

Ayana bravely shares her journey to educate and create a safe space for parents. Let's break the taboo around postpartum mood disorders and support each other through the ups and downs of parenthood.
