×Without a doubt, a large vocabulary is important when you are learning English as a Second Language (ESL). One way to learn new words that are very useful for school is to study the words on the Academic Word List . This is a list of words developed by Dr. Averil Coxhead, and they are high frequency words used in academic settings such as a university or college. If you plan on studying at an English university or college, it’s a good idea to learn these words! However, even if you do not, they are good words to know because a large English vocabulary will definitely help your ability to read in English. To help you learn the word crucial , which is on the Academic Word List, I’ve created a short podcast (under two minutes!) to help with pronunciation and hear some example sentences using the word crucial in context. It’s crucial that you understand this sign if you decide to take this exit. Maybe the first sentence in this post would be better if it said: Without a doubt, a large vocabulary is crucial when you are learning English as a Second Language (ESL). ¿Has escuchado el modismo “April showers bring May flowers” antes? Déjame un comentario y avísame… April Idiom I want to share with you an idiom in English that is very appropriate for today. Because it was very rainy today (and it’s April), I thought about the saying: “April showers bring May flowers.” A Bilingual Podcast Today is something new for me, I created a bilingual podcast. You can hear my explanation and pronunciation of the idiom ”April showers bring May flowers.” I had just finished walking my dog when I made the recording outside my house, so it’s a little noisey. I know there are errors in my Spanish, but remember it’s my second language. I hope you still like the podcast. Have you heard the idiom “April showers bring May Flowers” before? Once Is Not Enough – Español en la parte abajo This post is all about two! There are several words that are good to know in English that are associated with the number two. These words help you to express the concept of two without saying the number two. Let’s look at the words. Pair People use the word pair when they want to express two of something or two people together. Here are two examples: 1) I bought a new pair of shoes yesterday. 2) The children sat in pairs in the classroom. Couple The word couple is also used to describe two of something or people. However, you use it in a different way than the word pair . Again, here are two examples: 1) I need a couple of people to help me clean the house. — It is incorrect to say, “I need a pair of people to help…” 2) I’ll see you in a couple of minutes. — You would never say, “I’ll see you in a pair of minutes.” I should point out that the word couple always means two, and should not be confused with the word few , which means more than two. Double Double is a nice English word that means two times. How about two examples? I’m glad you asked! 1) Double click on the icon to open the program. 2) My electric bill is almost double the amount that I paid last month. Twice The word twice means two times. And now it’s time for two examples. 1) It takes twice as long to get to my new job. 2) Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. Audio Recording In order to help with pronunciation, I’ve created a podcast of this post. You can listen to the recording by using the audio player at the bottom of this post. If you have any questions about these words, please leave a comment! Tough Words (Español en la parte abajo) Some words in English are just difficult! I want to help you better understand difficult words in English, so I created this podcast called “Tough Word Tuesday.” The word tough in English is a synonym for something that is difficult. For example, if hearing the difference between two similar sounding words is difficult for you, then you could say the words are “tough to understand.” Well, now that you know the reason for the title “Tough Word Tuesday”, let’s take a look at the words. Fifteen or Fifty Two words in English that are often confused are fifteen and fifty. The are both numbers, fifteen = 15 and fifty = 50. What makes these two words tough to understand is they sound same except, the end sound of the words are different. Fifteen has an /n/ sound at the end of the word and fifty does not. So when you listen to the podcast (at the bottom of this post) focus your listening on the endings of the words. Example Sentences and Some Advice In the podcast I use two example sentences so that you can hear the words in use. The sentences are: “I leave for work at 9:15.” and “I arrive at 9:50.” My advice is that you listen to this podcast a few times, if you can’t hear the difference between the words fifteen and fifty . I also recommend that you say the words in order to improve your pronunciation, and this might help you to notice the sound difference at the end of the words. What are some other words that are “tough” for you in English? Leave a comment and let me know! A Common Symbol (Español abajo) The @ is called the at symbol or the at sign . You will hear people call it both names. I believe the @ is technically a symbol, but many people refer to it as a sign, and it’s not incorrect in everyday English to say either one. Nowadays, the @ is very common because of email. The symbol is used in all email addresses, and when you tell someone your email address you say the word at for the symbol. How to Correctly Say Your Email Address At some point you will need to tell someone your email address, and for this reason it’s important to know how to say it. Of course, you will first need to know how to say the letters of the alphabet in English. (Or at least the letters in your email address!) If you’re struggling with how to pronounce the English alphabet check out this video . If you already know the names of the letters, then let’s take a look at an example of how to say an email address. Example of an Email Address If a person named John Doe has an email address of jdoe@gmail.com, he would tell another person his email by saying each letter out loud, and say the word at for the symbol, @. For example, j-d-o-e-at-gmail-dot-com. Because gmail is a popular email service, it really isn’t necessary to spell the word, so you can just say the word gmail . Also note, that the punctuation mark before com is called a dot . When talking about English grammar this punctuation mark is called a period , but when saying an email address or the name of a website, a person calls it a dot . At the bottom of this post there’s an audio file to help you understand how to say an email address in English. The @ Used as an Abbreviation Sometimes when people write in English they use abbreviations. This is done to save space or to save time when taking notes in class, for example. Take a look at this photo to see a sign that someone made with the @ used as an abbreviation for the word at . The sign was in an office where clients needed to sign in before their appointment. Do you know what the sign says? Leave a comment and let me know! Un Símbolo Común El @ se llama at symbol o at sign .
