×Brown Girl Self-Care is where Black women reclaim our wholeness and power in a world that demands our labor but denies our humanity. Here, the care of ourselves—and the care for each other—become sacred acts of justice, powerful ways of honoring our humanity in a world that doesn’t. In this episode of the Brown Girl Self-Care podcast, I’m opening up about what I learned from taking an unplanned break. After moving and needing time to settle in, I found myself sitting in the discomfort of not producing—of not showing up in the ways I usually do. And even though I knew I needed the rest, there was still that lingering feeling that I should be doing more. I’ll share how this experience reminded me that we are often more tired than we realize , how the pressure to always be productive is deeply tied to colonization and capitalism, and why it’s so important to give ourselves permission to pause before burnout forces us to stop. In this episode, I’m sharing five key things to keep in mind when you’re struggling to rest: You’re probably more tired than you even realize. We’ve been conditioned to run on empty for so long that exhaustion can feel normal—until we finally stop. Resting will make you uncomfortable at first. When we’re used to equating our worth with productivity, stepping back can feel unnatural. That’s colonization talking. The world won’t fall apart because you take a break. We carry so much on our shoulders, but the truth is, things will keep moving even when we pause. You don’t have to feel “ready” to rest. If you’re waiting for a perfect moment to slow down, it’ll never come. Your body, mind, and spirit need care now. You have permission to pause. You don’t have to earn your rest. You don’t have to justify it. Rest is your birthright. If you’ve ever felt uneasy about slowing down—like you’re somehow falling behind or not doing enough—this episode is for you. Let’s take this journey together—we are worthy of this care. 1 Moving, Starting Over and Letting Go of 95% Of All My Stuff Because I Can't Afford To Take It With Me 40:28
Brown Girl Self-Care is where Black women reclaim our wholeness and power in a world that demands our labor but denies our humanity. Here, the care of ourselves—and the care for each other—become sacred acts of justice, powerful ways of honoring our humanity in a world that doesn’t. In this episode of the Brown Girl Self-Care podcast, I’m sharing an intimate life update as I prepare to move from California to Arkansas. I’m opening up about the emotional and practical challenges I’ve faced along the way, including letting go of 95% of my possessions due to financial constraints. I’ll share how deeply rooted scarcity and self-worth struggles have shaped my life and why this move represents more than just a physical transition—it’s a journey of healing, grief, and reclaiming intentionality. I’ll also introduce my upcoming collaboration with Yolanda, founder of Parenting Decolonized , as we work together to create a sustainable living community for single Black mothers and their children. This episode is about resilience, community, and embracing change, even when it feels hard. Let’s take this journey together—we are worthy of this care. Brown Girl Self-Care is a space where Black women come to honor our humanity and reclaim our power in a world that takes us for granted. Here, choosing ourselves—our healing, our joy, and our rest—is an act of radical resistance and deep self-love. In this episode, we’re exploring the emotional toll that masking takes on Black women. We’ll start with a few deep breaths to create a calming space and then dive into my journey of setting boundaries and acknowledging my emotions, reminding us that healing can bring up some friction. We’ll also unpack the societal pressures Black women face to mask their true feelings, using Angela Bassett’s reaction at the Oscars as an example. This conversation critiques cultural expectations that demand we hide our pain to keep others comfortable, and instead encourages us to embrace our humanity, honor our emotions, and create spaces where we can be authentic. Here, the care of ourselves—and the care for each other—become radical acts of love and justice, profound ways of honoring our humanity in a world that doesn’t. In this episode, we unpack the discomfort and stigma that Black women often feel when it comes to asking for and receiving help. Cultural, familial, and societal influences can make vulnerability feel unsafe, but learning to receive is essential for our healing, growth, and liberation. I’ll share personal reflections, practical tips for practicing vulnerability (including how to accept compliments!), and encouragement to embrace the abundance and support that divine resources offer us. In this quick episode, let's talk about the idea of breaking free from legalism and embracing grace as a foundation for personal growth in this new season. Legalism is the strict adherence to moral codes that kept me stuck for years until I realized how important it was for me to unlearn the harm of this kind of mindset. If you are moving towards more self-love, acceptance, and peace, your daily practice of life has got to include allowing for more grace and less strictness. This year has had some amazing things come to fruition, but it was also hard in some ways. too. When you are the one in your family or circle breaking generational cycles, or if you are blooming into some life changes right now, it's easy for our minds to feel like it's always going to stay hard or that you will struggle forever. Choosing peace as I'm talking about in this episode isn't about bypassing your feelings or pretending that everything is cool. Instead it's deciding that you are doing the best you can and that it is ok to lay claim to peace instead of chaos. I wanted to share a quick insight from the book 'The Four Pivots' by Shawn A. Ginwright, PhD. Specifically I'm highlighting a powerful quote from the book: 'I choose peace of mind instead of this.' It brought me so much clarity as I continue working through some challenges that my hope is that it's a powerful affirmation for you as well. In this episode of the Brown Girls Self Care Podcast, I'm sharing three critical actions Black women can take in 2025 to transform their lives with more healing and joy. The episode emphasizes the importance of dating oneself regularly, undertaking solo trips to foster self-reliance and personal growth, and implementing 'think weeks' or days for deep reflection and planning. These are practices we can use to validate ourselves, embrace our humanity, and prioritize our comfort, ease, and liberation. Hey y’all, it’s Bre here, and this week, I’m pulling back the curtain to let you in on the big changes happening with Brown Girl Self-Care as well as with me. I recently made the decision to close down the newsletter, and today, I’m talking about why—and what’s coming next. I’ll be sharing how this next chapter of Brown Girl Self-Care will include three areas that are deeply important to me and, I think, to you too: Black Women’s Health : Taking care of our mental, physical, and emotional well-being, because health is part of our freedom. Building Businesses That Honor Rest : Talking about how we can make a living on our own terms without grinding ourselves down or having to feel fake as we do it. Living Sustainably and Bucking Norms : I'm going all in on a lifestyle that aligns with my values and supports Black women, roots keeping, our community, and my peace. So more us and less capitalism and consumerism.
