He is invited to spend his summer vacation at the home of Percy Washington, a school-mate. On the way Percy tells John his father is the richest man in the world and owns "a diamond bigger than the Ritz-Carlton Hotel." When he arrives at the mountain home John appreciates everything Percy has told him is true. He soon learns, however, the wealthy family will do anything, no matter how ruthless, to keep both their home and their diamond a secret from the outside world.
