×If you thought one Robert Pattinson was good, wait 'til you see two of them in "Mickey 17." We couldn't wait to review the latest sci-fi/satire extravaganza from the great South Korean auteur Bong Joon Ho, his first film since the historic Oscar wins of his 2019 masterpiece, "Parasite." But while we both enjoyed Pattinson's dual performances, we're split on how effective "Mickey 17" is as a whole. Co-starring Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette. In theaters now. Then we had a lot to talk about during our regular Friday Movie News LIVE!: Oscar follow-ups, the start of South by Southwest, John Mulaney's "Everybody's Live" on Netlix and more. Join us for these weekly livestreams every Friday at Noon Pacific. And over at our Patreon , we've started recapping "Daredevil: Born Again" on Disney+. Plus we're in the middle of "The White Lotus" season 3 and we have "The Last of Us," "Andor" and "The Handmaid's Tale" coming. Now is a great time to join us! Thanks for being here. Irish Red is here from Athletic Brewing Co! A delicious and refreshing non-alcoholic red with notes of caramel and stone fruit, perfect for enjoying on St. Patrick's Day (without the hangover the day after). Oscar Night was so much fun that we couldn't wait to wake up and talk about everything that happened. In case you missed our reaction livestream on our YouTube channel , here it is for your listening enjoyment. "Anora" was the big winner of the night with five Academy Awards, and Sean Baker made history for winning four of them for the same film: best picture, director, screenplay and editing. Plus Mikey Madison was (sort of) the surprise winner in the best actress category for her star-making turn in the title role. We didn't do too well in terms of our predictions, but it was fun being wrong. What did you think of the show, the dresses, Conan? Let us know, and thanks for being with us all awards season long. Breakfast All Day movie reviews

A quick, mixed bag, and it's coming at you on a Thursday for a change, in our latest episode of Breakfast All Day. We begin with a tribute to Gene Hackman, the legendary actor who was discovered dead in his Santa Fe, N.M., home this week. The two-time Oscar winner was 95 years old. His wife and one of his dogs had died, as well, and authorities are investigating. But we wanted to remember his long and varied career, and we'll honor Hackman further with our March Off the Menu poll, so keep an eye out for that. Also, we catch up with "Grand Theft Hamlet," a totally original documentary about a couple of actors who staged a production of "Hamlet" entirely within the video game Grand Theft Auto Online. It's hilarious but also surprisingly poignant. Streaming now on Mubi. We're posting a day early because we're taking part in the Feb. 28 Economic Blackout. This is a movement that's encouraging people to avoid spending money with big stores and companies on Friday. We're taking it a step further and avoiding sharing content online, including our usual Friday Movie News LIVE! But! Join us on Sunday night for our 2025 Oscar Watch Party. We'll be at our YouTube channel starting at 3:30pm Pacific time, and we'll hang out for the whole show. We look forward to chatting with you about the winners, the speeches, the dresses, and the jokes from host Conan O'Brien. Make sure you hit the Notify Me button so you don't miss a thing: https://youtube.com/live/u1mAAEsjupU?feature=share Also that night, we're teaming up again with our friends at Super Streaming for a fun interactive experience. The 2025 Academy Awards are in just a few days, so it's time for our annual predictions livestream. In case you missed us at our YouTube channel, here's our discussion in audio form for you to enjoy on the go. Make sure to check in with us on Oscar night when we'll go LIVE for the entirety of the show. We'll be at our YouTube channel starting at 3:30pm Pacific on Sunday, March 2. Wind us up and we talk about movies here at Breakfast All Day. Just a quick visit this Friday, as we're being pulled in various directions during awards season. But we had to review "The Monkey," the insane horror-comedy from writer-director Osgood Perkins. It's about a toy monkey that likes to kill people. You'll laugh, you'll scream. See it in a packed theater if possible. In theaters. Then we have an extra long Movie News LIVE! segment. There's so much to talk about between the state of awards season, Amazon buying the James Bond franchise, "The Last of Us" season 2 and more. Join us here every Friday at Noon Pacific. And make sure you mark your calendar for next Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Noon Pacific, when we'll do our annual Oscar predictions live chat. Our great friend Glenn Whipp, awards expert for the LA Times, will be back to share his insights. Bring your ballot, because we'll go category by category. Win your Oscar pool (or at least sound smart at parties talking about sound design). Thanks for sharing some of your time with us this weekend! Arthouse Tuesday is also Oscar Tuesday this week, as we catch up with a couple of Academy Award nominees. First, we review "Flow," which is up for best animated feature and best international feature. This delicate, wordless film from Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis follows a cat, a dog and various other creatures as they team up to survive after a catastrophic flood. In theaters and available for rental. Plus, we discuss "September 5," a gripping drama that recounts the hostage crisis that rocked the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. It recreates how the ABC Sports team responded to this breaking news with no real blueprint for covering a live terrorist attack. It's been nominated for best original screenplay. Available for rental and on DVD/Blu-ray. Thanks for hanging out with us during this midweek pop-in! And mark your calendar for next Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Noon Pacific, when we'll do our annual Oscar Predictions Livestream at our YouTube channel. Breakfast All Day movie reviews

We're here to serenade you on this Valentine's Day episode of Breakfast All Day with reviews of two new music documentaries. Alonso's not feeling well, so his husband Dave White was lovely enough to share his insights. First, we discuss "Becoming Led Zeppelin," which traces the origins of one of the greatest bands in rock history. It's been playing for the past week in IMAX, and if you can see it that way, it's like being at a concert with that huge screen and incredible sound. Expanding to more theaters nationwide today. We also discuss the latest film from Questlove, "Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)," about Sly Stone of Sly & the Family Stone. The film explores Stone's musical ingenuity as well as his struggles with substance abuse, and features interviews with artists who help put his greatness into perspective. Streaming on Hulu. No movie news today, but check back with us next Friday at Noon Pacific. Have a terrific holiday weekend! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/…

Breakfast All Day movie reviews

We have early reviews today of a couple big Valentine's Weekend movies: That's how much we love you here at Breakfast All Day. First, the disappointing "Captain America: Brave New World," which looked like it had potential as a suspenseful, '70s-style political thriller. Anthony Mackie is very good as he straps on the shield and steps into Chris Evans' Avengers role, but the movie itself is a mess. In theaters. Then, we were both delighted by "Paddington in Peru," the follow-up to one of Alonso's favorite movies ever, 2017's "Paddington 2." Ben Whishaw returns as the gentle voice of Britain's beloved bear, leading the way through madcap adventures in the Amazonian jungle. Also in theaters. Check back with us on Friday when we'll have reviews of the music documentaries "Becoming Led Zeppelin" and "Sly Lives!" Thanks for being here.…

It's an extremely February mix on the latest Breakfast All Day episode, including a terrible Valentine's movie and an excellent Oscar nominee. We begin with "Love Hurts," which we thought had potential because it stars Ke Huy Quan and Ariana DeBose, both recent Academy Award winners. But they have zero chemistry with each other in this action romance. In theaters. Then we review "No Other Land," a documentary from a collective of Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers who captured the Israeli military's occupation of the West Bank's Masefar Yatta. It's up for best documentary feature at the Academy Awards, but it's a miracle that it even exists. In theaters in limited release and expanding to more cities. Finally, we're back with Movie News LIVE!, where we catch up with the state fof awards season between last night's LA Film Critics dinner and all the continuing "Emilia Pérez" madness. Plus: a couple of summer blockbuster trailers are out, and more in the ongoing legal saga between Blake Likely and Justin Baldoni. Join us every Friday at Noon Pacific. Breakfast All Day movie reviews

This might be the art-housiest Arthouse Tuesday we've ever done, as we catch up with two of the five films nominated for best international feature at this year's Oscars. The first, "I'm Still Here," is also up for the top prize of all, best picture, as well as best actress for Fernanda Torres' beautifully subtle performance. Torres stars in this true story as a wife and mother trying to hold her family together during Brazil's military dictatorship in the early 1970s. Veteran filmmaker Walter Salles directs. It's in theaters now. Then we catch up with "The Seed of the Sacred Fig" from Iranian writer-director Mohammad Rasoulof, who made the film entirely in secret. Rasoulof, who also won best director from the LA Film Critics Association, tells the story of a family that gets caught up in the political turmoil of the recent "Woman Life Freedom" uprising in Tehran. In theaters and streaming. We still have "Flow" to go, and then we'll have reviewed all five films in this category. Keep an eye (and ear) out for our Oscar predictions livestream on Feb. 25. Until then, thanks for listening! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/…

Breakfast All Day movie reviews

January finally -- mercifully -- has come to an end. And we're here to help you wrap it up with a quick visit on Breakfast All Day. First, we review "You're Cordially Invited," the kind of comedy that used to come out in actual theaters but is now streaming on Prime Video. Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell clash in this extremely R-rated wedding comedy. It's getting extremely mixed reviews but we laughed a lot. Then, we have a SPOILER review of the sci-fi thriller "Companion," because we didn't know how to tell you how great it was without getting into all of its twists. So if you'd like to avoid spoilers, you might want to turn off this episode around the 15:09 mark. If not, feel free to listen with reckless abandon. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid play a young couple who travel with some friends to a beautiful house in the woods. Bad things happen. You've been warned! No Movie News LIVE! today because Christy had lunch plans with one of her best friends who was visiting from out of town. But come back and see us next Friday, Feb. 7 at Noon Pacific time. Thanks for being here! Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/…

Breakfast All Day movie reviews

It's a random Arthouse Tuesday here at Breakfast All Day, with reviews of two extremely different films. First, we discuss the documentary "Luther: Never Too Much," about the late, legendary R&B singer Luther Vandross. Director Dawn Porter's film is an appreciative exploration of Vandross' talent, work ethic and attention to detail. Whether you're a huge fan or you don't know much about him, you'll find this entertaining. In theaters this weekend, streaming on OWN starting Feb. 7 and Max starting Feb. 8. Then, we catch up with "The Girl With the Needle," the exquisitely beautiful and harrowing Danish film that's up for the best international feature Oscar. Director and co-writer Magnus von Horn tells the story of a young pregnant woman (Van Carmen Sonne) who seeks help from a charismatic shopkeeper (Trine Dyrholm) in 1919 Copenhagen. Shot in high-contrast black and white, it's gorgeous but grim. It was also on Christy's top-10 list for 2024. In theaters now and streaming on Mubi. Thanks for being here. Come on back Friday for reviews of "Companion" and "You're Cordially Invited." Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/…

Breakfast All Day movie reviews

For the most part, it's a surprisingly good week for January movies here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with the one that's not so good: "Flight Risk," and even that's not completely terrible. Mark Wahlberg stars as a pilot flying a U.S. Marshal (Michelle Dockery) and a fugitive (Topher Grace) to Anchorage, but the skies aren't so friendly. Mel Gibson directs, which you'd never know from the trailers. In theaters. Then, we loved "Presence," the latest experimental lark from Steven Soderbergh. It's a haunted house movie where the ghost is the camera. Soderbergh makes clever, elegant use of his first-person perspective. In theaters. We also catch up with the comedy "One of Them Days," which is a total delight. Keke Palmer and SZA have terrific chemistry as roommates who must come up with the rent on their run-down Los Angeles apartment by the end of the day, or they'll be evicted. It felt really good to laugh this week. In theaters. Finally, we did our usual Friday Movie News LIVE! We followed up on Oscar nominations, our wildfire fundraiser, Razzie Award nominations and the start of the Sundance Film Festival. No news on Jan. 31, but come back and join us on Feb. 7. Thanks for being here with us! We had an incredible turnout today for our annual Oscar Nominations LIVE Chat! Thanks to all the lovely folks who woke up early with us on Hollywood's biggest morning. "Emilia Pérez" leads all nominees with 13 -- which is historic for a foreign-language film -- followed by "The Brutalist" and "Wicked" with 10 each. We were thrilled by some nominations (Coralie Fargeat in best director for "The Substance") and bummed by the omission of others (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross in best score for "Challengers"). And we were proud and thrilled to receive such a tremendous outpouring of support for our LA Wildfire fundraiser. All the Super Chat and Super Thanks donations we've gotten will go toward three charities we've selected: the Entertainment Community Fund, Pasadena Humane Society and World Central Kitchen. Just from the stream alone, we raised $936.59, which is way more than we expected, and that number keeps growing as people have added to it in the hours since. So thank you all for your generosity. If you'd like to contribute, the YouTube link is here . Click on the three dots beneath the video, then Thanks. Let us know what your thoughts were on this year's nominations. And keep an eye out for our Oscar Predictions livestream, which will happen a few days before the Academy Awards on March 2.…

We've got some mediocre January movies and a lengthy news segment to keep you company on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day. First, we review "Wolf Man," director Leigh Whannell's take on the classic creature feature. Christopher Abbott stars as a husband and father who takes his family back to his childhood home in the Oregon woods. Bad things happen. Julia Garner and Matilda Firth co-star. In theaters. Then, Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx re-team for the generic comedy "Back in Action." Diaz (in her first movie in a decade) and Foxx play ex-spies in suburbia who get dragged back in the fray when their cover is blown. Their shocked kids must go along for the adventure, too. Ironic needle drops and bad special effects ensue. Streaming now on Netflix. Finally, it's a jam-packed Movie News LIVE! We talk about the state of the LA Wildfires, awards season, and how they'll affect each other in the weeks to come. Plus we try to untangle the whole Justin Baldoni/Blake Lively "It Ends With Us" fiasco, which has ended with them suing each other. And of course, we remember the singular David Lynch, who died this week at 78. Thanks for being with us during this busy, difficult time. And make sure to join us at our YouTube channel on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 8am Pacific for our Oscar Nominations livestream, which will be a fundraiser for wildfire relief efforts.
