Adam Rico-Interview on Career Tips & TrendsWelcome to Career Tips & Trends.
Internet radio for savvy professionals –
doing work you love, work that matters
.

Our guest this episode is Adam Rico, career coach and recruiter.

We asked Adam to join us to talk about fitting our personality with our work.

From the show

I decided to go to grad school. Got a graduate degree in marriage and family therapy. I then moved into that world to become a family therapist. I thought that would be my career my entire life in some form or another…

came to this realization that it wasn’t really a good fit for me… I really went through this period of doing some soul searching of what exactly do I want to do? What is my personality? What is going to be a good fit for me where I can find success?

I think that is a great point and one of the things that I learned along the way that I wish I had implemented myself was there are safe ways to explore. You can check things out without fully committing to it and damaging your career path or current financial situation. Things like job shadowing or volunteering and just getting exposure to certain other types of jobs. You can still go through the exploratory process but with maybe a little less risk.

Absolutely, the personality assessments can be used for multiple areas of our lives and I think that is why companies give them to their employees because they can be used to increase communication, to navigate conflict, to enhance leadership skills. There are so many applications that can be done with a personality assessment.

I think in today’s work world things can be described as volatile. The security of yesteryear where you work for a company for 35 years and get your gold watch, that is not existent any more. Even people who are satisfied in their careers would benefit from going through this process because there is always the question of what is my next move? It is rare that people stay in one job for their whole live, even if they stay in the same career path, they are likely going to change employers or slightly change the direction that they are applying their skills. This is a process that everyone goes through throughout their career.
