This podcast has been a dream of mine for years and I’m so excited you are joining me on this journey!

I’m Carolyn Wahl and my passion is teaching middle school. I’ve been in education for more than 20 years and I’ve taught ELA in all grades from 6th - 12th. And if you’ve taught these grades I’m sure you’ll agree they are the best!

I started this podcast because over the past decade I’ve noticed an increase in students who enter middle school reading well below grade level. I’ve seen my ELA class discussions shift from deep discussions about literature and life to teaching students how to read.

I was not taught how to teach reading to teens and this left me feeling inadequate on how to help meet the needs of my students.

Through discussions with other ELA teachers, a lot of research, and some amazing professional development from top experts in reading and writing workshops, I’ve learned how to teach reading and how to instill a love of reading for so many of my students.

The Middle School Café Podcast is here to help teachers just like you close the achievement gap in your classroom.

Every episode will focus on strategies to help your students become passionate readers and writers, regardless of their current grade level.

Join me every week as I show you how I help students stop dreading independent reading and start asking to have more time to read. I’ll share my success and failures along the way so you’ll know what to do and what to avoid.
