Growing up on the land offers and idyllic childhood for so many kids. But it’s certainly not without its challenges for the parents. Motivated by her own experience of raising youngsters on a farm in Tasmania, my guest today saw a few gaps that needed to be addressed. So, she created Australia’s first personalised online rural mothers’ group. Motherland Village provides greater opportunities for rural mums across the country to find connection and support, regardless of their location. Founder Stephanie Trethewey is today’s guest. We discuss:

  • Stephanie's favourite place on her farm in beautiful Tasmania.
  • Moving from the city to the country, falling in love with a farmer and becoming a mother, all in a matter of a few years.
  • The feeling of failure Stephanie struggled with and, the pressure she felt to be resilient.
  • Stephanie realised there was a need in regional communities for support and networking - her answer was Motherland.
  • Stephanie filled a much-needed role in the community and the uptake has been extraordinary with over 140 members and 10 established virtual villages.
  • The feedback and, impact that this program is having on parents all over the country.
  • Of the Mums who have completed the program, 90% say it has improved their mental health.
  • Stephanie is working on some exciting partnerships with hospitals so all women are aware of the support available.
  • Now that she is on the land, Stephanie loves how connected she is to her food system.
  • The most unexpected thing to happen to her since moving to the country.
  • The most common misconception about being a mother in Rural Australia.
  • Stephanie’s ultimate dream for the future.

We hope to see you back on the road soon, to learn more about how Australia grows on the next episode of Australian Farmers with Angie Asimus.
