Dr. Judy is thrilled to launch her exclusive new special edition podcast series “Forensics: Dr. Judy Investigates” where she uses her expertise as a forensic psychologist to uncover the psychology behind some of the most talked-about cases in the nation.

On this episode of Supercharged Life, Dr. Judy launches her first 3-episode installment of this special edition series, which focuses on the case explored in the hugely popular Netflix series “Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel.” This amazing docuseries highlights the history and cultural relevance of the Cecil Hotel in the skid row area of Los Angeles, where a young Canadian woman disappeared – and details the fascinating events that unfolded as people tried to make sense of what happened.

Dr. Judy uses her expertise as a clinical and forensic neuropsychologist to explore the psychology behind the events, from the intense reactions on the internet and the conspiracy theories that abound, to why people refused to accept what the facts bore out, and how the evidence from Elisa Lam’s Tumblr, the results of the police investigation, and the findings from her autopsy report all point to one clear explanation that was largely ignored by the media frenzy. All of this connects back to the misunderstandings that still abound about mental illness, the impact of self-stigma and community stigma, and how we can empower individuals who are struggling to get the help they need to live meaningful lives. Dr. Judy is so passionate about this story as she discusses the lessons it can teach us all.

In next week’s episode, Dr. Judy welcomes the amazing director of the Netflix docu-series Joe Berlinger and in the final episode, Dr. Judy answers all of your burning questions that have been pouring in about this case and offers her Supercharged Tips about how to take care of yourself and your loved ones who are struggling with mental illness.

In this episode, we discuss:

  1. Crucial themes explored in Netflix’s Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (1:35)
  2. Dr. Judy’s three objectives for this episode and what you’ll learn from listening to this episode (3:35)
