Many thanks to Spencer Bishins for joining me on “The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.”
Spencer is a graduate of the London School of Economics, an attorney, and the author of Social Security Disability Revealed: Why it’s so hard to access benefits and what you can do about it.
Spencer’s qualifications to write this book include working for the Social Security Administration at the Appeals Council for almost four years, reviewing thousands of disability decisions for compliance with SSA’s complex rules and procedures. He then worked at the hearing level for seven years, where he drafted almost 2,000 decisions for SSA Administrative Law Judges.
Please join us for this informative 30-minute interview where Spencer shares his experiences in his book to aid those who face the challenge of obtaining social security benefits for disabling medical and psychiatric conditions.
The book will also help physicians and other health care providers write more effective letters of support for their patients applying for social security benefits. For example, physicians should not state that a patient is “disabled,” as this is a determination that only social security can make. A detailed description of the patient’s physical and mental limitations is much more valuable.
Spencer also stresses that it is worthwhile for claimants to hire a knowledgeable representative who can shepherd them through the long and complex bureaucratic Social Security Disability application process.
