Timothy Allen on BBC Human Planet, Judging Travel Photographer of the Year & Thinking Differently About Photography Income Creation.
"Offer more than you're asking for."
- Timothy Allen
Timothy Allen (@timothy_allen | humanplanet.com) Timothy Allen was born in Tonbridge in the South East of England in 1971. At 22, after graduating from Leeds University with a BSc Zoology he left the UK and spent 3 years travelling through Indonesia before beginning a part-time diploma in photography at Hereford College of Art and Design. After joining an aid convoy to Bosnia in order to shoot his first-year reportage project his work received some attention and he consequently left college, moved to London and began working for the Sunday Telegraph, later inspiring commissions from all the British broadsheet publications and finally, a 6 year position at The Independent working predominantly on features and portraits. Timothy joined Axiom Photographic Agency in 2002 leading him to cover a dynamic and broad spectrum of global stories with subjects ranging from the civil war in the remote Spice Islands of far eastern Indonesia, to the intriguing subculture of The World Taxidermy Championships in Springfield , Illinois.
Beginning in 2009 the BBC commissioned Timothy to work on the landmark series Human Planet. For two years he was in charge of the production’s photography at a time when the first DSLRs were beginning to adopt HD film capabilities and consequently his job included shooting film footage and multimedia content as well as the conventional photographic stills destined for use in the programme’s worldwide publicity, a best selling book and a touring photographic exhibition. The weekly blog he wrote documenting his experiences during that incredible project can be found here.
In recent years the focus of his work has continued to move in the direction of multimedia production taking him to every corner of the globe, from 19 000 ft up in the Himalayas to 40 metres beneath the South China Sea as well as projects within communities in the Arctic, tropical rain forests and remote desert locations.
Timothy is a regular commentator on TV and radio in the field of media and travel/exploration and he has appeared in a number of films and documetaries. He is also an experienced public speaker having undertaken inspirational lecture tours for the likes of the Royal Geographical Society as well as giving keynote presentations at conferences and corporate events around the world. He also runs a small number of very popular workshops and expeditions for photographers and filmmakers who desire the opportunity to work and learn alongside him.
In 2016 Timothy created a photography scholarship award in conjunction with the Sharjah Government Media Bureau. Each year the Timothy Allen Photography Scholarship Award (TAPSA) is awarded to 5 photographers from around the world and includes a 10 day trip to the United Arab Emirates to work alongside Allen.
Commendations include: 6 Picture Editors Guild Awards, 19 Travel Photographer of the Year commendations including the overall title in 2013, The Pangea Award of Excellence at SIPA 2016, 2 British Press Awards nominations as Photographer of the Year and a Press Photographer’s Year Award. ‘Human Planet’ has received a host of awards including 2 BAFTAs, an Emmy and the ITB Cultural Book Prize.
“Better known for my photographs of far away places I am also a producer/director of films. I began work in London’s Fleet Street… Guardian, Telegraph and Times before settling down at The Independent for 6 years. After leaving the world of photojournalism I slipped into a life on the road shooting documents of the most interesting things I could find on the planet. My passion has always been indigenous cultures, sparked by a life-changing encounter I had with an isolated community whilst on an university ecological research project in 1991. Nowadays I love visiting remote locations and the exceptional people who inhabit them.
Please don’t mistake me for a documentarian in the traditional sense. That, I am certainly not. My films and photographs are often very subjective and I enjoy viewing the world through overly romantic eyes. Similarly, my intention is not to ‘document disappearing cultures for the sake of future generations’. That is a concept I’ve never felt comfortable with. As far as I can tell, the main motivation behind my work is a desire to understand myself and the relationships I have with other people. It is a very personal journey of discovery that is also my living. If my work inspires you to do the same then that is a good thing as far as I’m concerned. It is my belief that our individual journeys offer us all the chance to become better people.
When ever I get the chance I travel as a backpacker and I always turn off my mobile phone while I’m away. I am a traveler from the pre-internet generation of Poste Restante and word-of mouth so I’m always looking for that kind of experience in my 21st century journeys. I try not to get cynical about the contemporary world but forgive me if my years get the better of me every now and then. Amongst many other things, I love the outdoors, gardening and especially my adoptive country Wales where I live with my family on a quiet hill near Hay on Wye.”
Please enjoy!

1:44:5021. #TSPSP21 Simon Norfolk on Layered Landscape Photography, Doing the Opposite, Planning Your Images & Early Starts. Simon Norfolk ( www.simonnorfolk.com | Instagram: @simonnorfolkstudio) Simon Norfolk is a landscape photographer whose work over twenty years has been themed around a probing and stretching of the meaning of the word 'battlefield' in all its forms. As such, he has photographed in some of the world's worst war-zones and refugee crises, but is equally at home photographing supercomputers used to design military systems or the test-launching of nuclear missiles. Time’s layeredness in the landscape is an ongoing fascination of his. His work has been widely recognised: he has won The Discovery Prize at Les Rencontres d'Arles in 2005; The Infinity Prize from The International Center of Photography in 2004; and he was winner of the European Publishing Award, 2002. In 2003 he was shortlisted for the Citibank Prize now known as the Deutsche Börse Prize and in 2013 he won the Prix Pictet Commission. He has won multiple World Press Photo and Sony World Photography awards. He has produced four monographs of his work including 'Afghanistan: Chronotopia' (2002) which was published in five languages; 'For Most Of It I Have No Words' (1998) about the landscapes of genocide; and 'Bleed' (2005) about the war in Bosnia. His most recent is 'Burke + Norfolk; Photographs from the War in Afghanistan.' (2011). He has work held in major collections such as The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The Getty in Los Angeles as well as San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Wilson Centre for Photography and the Sir Elton John Collection. His work has been shown widely and internationally from Brighton to Ulaanbaatar and in 2011 his 'Burke + Norfolk' work was one of the first ever photography solo shows at Tate Modern in London. He has been described by one critic as 'the leading documentary photographer of our time. Passionate, intelligent and political; there is no one working in photography that has his vision or his clarity.' He is currently running at a pretty nifty Number 44 on 'The 55 Best Photographers of all Time. In the History of the World. Ever. Definitely.' 1:03:4618. #TSPSP18 Robin De Puy on Travelling 8000 miles Across America on a Harley Davidson, Honest Portraits & Being Curious Rob De Puy ( www.robindepuy.com | Instagram: @robin_de_puy) Robin de Puy’s (b.1986, the Netherlands) photographs start with a desire to tell her own story through the faces of others. Whether it’s the freckled adolescent she noticed whilst refuelling in Wyoming, the Dutch author, poet and columnist Remco Campert, or the boy Randy she met in Nevada whilst on her American road trip, de Puy sees the camera as an aid to understand the deeply personal traits and histories of each person, and how they also reveal something about herself. Many of her encounters are fleeting; a heartfelt glance into the life of someone else before time resumes its frantic pace. In others, as with Randy, those same transient experiences blossom into profound and enduring relationships. Regardless of which ending they have, de Puy’s photographs are always imbued with a sensitivity and timelessness that encourages a slow gaze on the human condition. Her images are chances for genuine human connection, and through sharing with them with the world, allow us to take part in such moments. “A Joyous, Mysterious Portrait of Rural American Boyhood.” ~ The New Yorker about her project RANDY Robin de Puy studied at the Fotoacademie Rotterdam and has been exhibited internationally at institutions and galleries including; Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht (2018); Museum Hilversum, Hilversum (2017); The Hague Museum of Photography, The Hague (2016); Stedelijk Museum, Breda (2016) and Photoville, New York (2016). Amongst numerous other awards, De Puy was the winner of the National Portrait Prize in both 2013 and 2019. Her work is held in major public and private collections including Bonnefantenmuseum, Maasstricht; De Nederlandse Bank, Amsterdam; Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar; Centraal Museum Utrecht, Utrecht; Fotomuseum Den Haag, The Hague; Huis Marseille, Amsterdam and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Hague. In 2015, de Puy took a 10,000 km road trip across the US on a Harley Davidson, making images that were published as the book If This Is True, I’ll Never Have to Leave Home Again in 2016. The trip was documented by Simone de Vries and Maarten van Rossem, and the film was nominated for an International Emmy Award in 2017. 1:22:4317. #TSPSP17 The Riker Brothers on Celebrity Clients, Directing Models, Shooting Quickly & Confidence on Set. The Riker Brothers ( www.rikerbrothers.com | @rikerbrothers) Born in Iowa City and growing up in a small town west of Chicago, twin brothers Derek and Drew Riker were introduced to photography by their father who was always taking pictures. After graduating from the University of Illinois with degrees in Economics and both taking jobs in Chicago, they were left feeling unfulfilled in the business world. Their lives would change while on vacation in Miami Beach when they were scouted to be models. Their first assignment was shooting with Bruce Weber for L’Uomo Vogue and after two days on location immersed in that incredibly creative environment it was clear what their new career would be. Living between New York and Miami, over the next several years they became obsessed with fashion photography and imagery. They were lucky enough to learn from some of their idols, including Bruce Weber, Arthur Elgort, Patrick Demarchelier, and their close friend and mentor Herb Ritts. An emphasis on natural light allows them the freedom of movement and to be spontaneous. With one behind the camera to technically compose the other is free to connect directly with the subject giving them an amazing ability to capture authentic moments. The brothers are currently based in Los Angeles. Please enjoy! *** If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? 14. #TSPSP14 (2/2) Julia Fullerton-Batten on Researching & Producing Personal Projects, Working With Casting Directors & Delivering Beyond the Brief. Julia Fullerton-Batten ( www.juliafullerton-batten.com | @julia_fullertonbatten) Julia Fullerton-Batten is a worldwide acclaimed and exhibited fine-art photographer. Her body of work now encompasses twelve major projects spanning a decade of engagement in the field. The foundation of her success was 'Teenage Stories' (2005), an evocative narrative of the transition of a teenage girl to womanhood. This and sequel projects portray the difficult stages and life situations of an adolescent girl's transition to womanhood as she grapples with the vulnerability of her teenage predicament – adjustments to a new body, her emotional development and changes in her social standing. Julia’s book ‘Teenage Stories’ was published in 2007*. Julia admits to a pronounced semi-autobiographical influence in much of her earlier work, often falling back on recollections of her own early and teenage years, living in Germany, the USA and the UK, her parent’s divorce, and her own early relationships. Her more recent projects consider social issues, frequently covering controversial subject matter. For example, in ‘Feral Children, 2015’, Julia re-enacts fifteen reported historical cases of feral children. Using child actors, her re-enactments illustrate the tragic circumstances in which children were rejected or abused by their parents, got lost or were left in the wild, and yet others were captured by wild animals. Her most recent project, ‘The Act', shot in 2016, is a comprehensive study of the performing and private lives of fifteen women active in the UK sex industry. Her still images are enhanced by interviews with the ladies, captured both in video and text. ‘The Act’ is now available in book form**. Fullerton-Batten was born in Bremen, Germany. Her early life was spent in Germany and the USA, but after her parent’s divorce she and her siblings moved to the UK. There she completed her secondary education, then studied photography at college. Subsequently she assisted professional photographers for five years before a first commercial assignment kick-started her career in 1995, and first gained recognition as a fine-art photographer in2005. Julia’s use of unusual locations, highly creative settings, street-cast models, accented with cinematic lighting are hallmarks of her very distinctive style of photography. She insinuates visual tensions in her images, and imbues them with a hint of mystery, which combine to tease the viewer to re-examine the picture, each time seeing more content and finding a deeper meaning. These distinctive qualities have established enthusiasts for her work worldwide and at all ends of the cultural spectrum, from casual viewers to connoisseurs of fine-art photography. Fullerton-Batten has won countless awards for both her commercial and fine-art work, and is a Hasselblad Master. She was commissioned by The National Portrait Gallery in London to shoot portraits of leading people in the UK National Health Service. These are now held there in a permanent collection. Other images are also in permanent collection at the Musee de l'Elysee, Lausanne, Switzerland. She is widely interviewed about her projects by professional photographic magazines from around the world and is sought after as a speaker at international events and as a judge for prestigious international photographic competitions. Julia lives in London with her husband and two young boys. Please enjoy! *** If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? 1:05:5211. #TSPSP11 (2/2) Martin Hartley on Career Visualisation, Empathy in Photography, Overcoming Fear & Digital vs Film. “If you’re not possessed by taking pictures, then you’re in the wrong job” - Martin Hartley Martin Hartley ( www.martinhartley.com | @martinrhartley) The photographic force that drives Martin Hartley forward on his explorations he carries with him into every single photographic assignment. “ To create an image, whatever the circumstances, or pressures wether its a portrait, a product photograph, an interior or an epic expedition image that sums up weeks of endeavour the challenge is always the same. To create an image that has a story that is the absolute best photograph possible, no matter what the weather, the deadline pressure or the brief, that is the beauty of the photography. Yet the two photographic worlds that Martin Hartley inhabits have a great deal in common: long days, non-negotiable deadlines and an ability to work in close quarters with tight teams. Martin has spent more than 400 demanding days working in the Arctic and Antarctic on more than 20 polar expeditions and assignments. Several of these endeavours have focused on collecting data to help scientists better understand our planet. Time magazine has acknowledged Martin’s contribution to science with its prestigious Hero of the Environment award for his research work on multiple surveys of the frozen Arctic Ocean. In 2017, Martin joined a North Pole expedition to collect snow depth measurements for the European Space Agency's CryoSat programme, which is being conducted in concert with NASA‘s Operation IceBridge mission. Martin's passion for using his hard-won expedition and photographic expertise to benefit the future of our planet has taken him beyond the polar regions to desert, jungle, mountain and oceanic environments. He has documented indigenous communities, corporate social responsibility initiatives and groundbreaking scientific programmes. Recently, Martin sailed with the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project documenting one of the largest multi-disciplinary maritime archaeology projects ever attempted. Away from expeditions, Martin focuses on portrait and commercial photography in more comfortable surroundings. He is regularly called upon to photograph people from all walks of life, from classical musicians and crane drivers to olympians and CEOs. His uncanny ability to capture the core of a person in a single frame has seen his portraiture grace the front covers of several autobiographies, including a BBC Radio 4 book of the week. On studio and location shoots for companies that range in size from multinational corporations to nascent ventures, clients enjoy the expedition-style perspective and enthusiasm that Martin brings to every project. In a typical fortnight he might supply exclusive imagery for a global advertising campaign, photograph clothing for the launch of a sustainable fashion brand and shoot interiors for a construction company. Martin’s assignments often entwine the worlds of adventure and commercial photography. On one memorable occasion, he was entrusted with Britain’s most famous sporting trophy, the FA Cup, on an extraordinary photographic journey to the South Pole. The Director of Photography for Sidetracked magazine, Martin has contributed to several books and is the co-author of Face to Face, a Sunday Times’ book of the week. Martin’s photographic philosophy has been recorded for posterity by the British Library’s oral history unit. Keen to support the next generation of explorers, scientists and photographers, Martin is an ambassador for the Youth Adventure Trust, which harnesses adventure to teach vulnerable children confidence and valuable life skills to fulfill their potential. Martin’s proudest professional moment to date came when his polar images were exhibited at the United Nations’ climate change conference in Copenhagen, where his photography helped to influence the future of our planet on the most important stage of all.
