On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul concludes his conversation with James Conroy-Finn about the meaning of life on a positive, self-empowering note.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Getting from where you are now to where you want to be sometimes requires self-reflection & an amount of self-awareness that maybe doesn’t come naturally. It can get uncomfortable when we start looking at mental health, depression, bereavement & other life events that can take us off course. Coaching is about helping other people navigate that journey, recognise some things about themselves & plan together to get them to where they want to be.
  • There’s something to be said for being content in oneself, not being too beholden to the opinion of others. But there is a balance. If you’re a pariah (an arsehole) you’re probably not going to do as well in life as if you are kind & decent
  • When talking to people face-to-face & they’re talking about their relationship with someone, you can see in their facial expressions things that maybe they aren’t articulating. When someone talks about their relationships with 2 different people, they might use certain words to describe 1 person and not for the other. The omission of a word – especially if it aligns with their values – can communicate something about the amount of respect they have for that person or the strength of their relationship.
  • We live by metaphors, it’s how we express everything: Life is a journey, move forward, don’t spend too much time in the past, look up not down. For some reason we think looking up is celestial, spiritual, aspirational & looking down is solemn, sedentary, depressing. To some degree you see that in people; if someone’s got their head down you think they’re feeling low. We understand our world through metaphors. You have to be careful using them when coaching, you need to be more clear.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Life is a journey we’re all on, taking steps towards something. Working out the right place to put your foot requires an understanding of your values'.

‘Jumping in to try & solve someone else’s problem isn’t always productive or helpful. Sitting back & giving them the opportunity to express their & really hear them is immensely valuable to them'.

‘Find someone you care about & have an interest in & say very little, just listen. There are little things we can do to get them to elaborate & help us understand where they are & where they’re trying to get to. Hopefully we can then get them to where they want to be'.

‘Be present & witness what’s going on around you'.
