I talked to Alan Thornburrow, the CEO of Salvesen Mindroom Centre and a parent of children with dyslexia. Salvesen Mindroom Centre or SMC has been working with dyslexia and neurodiversity for over 21 years and is continuously supporting people living with learning differences. Alan Thornburrow disengaged from school at 16. He struggled to find his place in the world until he managed to find a career in finance. Learning on the job, he realised he was learning more at work than at school and thought there might be others like him who weren’t successful at school but can do well in the real world. Alan has spent 20 years advocating for people that might see themselves as ‘other’ in the world. Alan’s job is to influence decision-makers, policymakers and funders into making the right decisions on inclusion and diversity in schools, the workplace and society more generally. SMC will host a global conference in March with over 50 speakers that include neuroscientists and nutrition experts; campaigners, clinicians, comedians; actors, artists and activists to provide insights into understanding our differences.
