Bruce Anderson is a coach who has founded the Core Gift Institute for helping people find their own sense of purpose. He lives on an island near Seattle.
This interview is part of the Archipelagos project, a project about coaching and anthropological research about islands and archipelagos as metaphors.
"I began to see that the conversation we really needed to have with people at big forks in their life was conversations about purposefulness rather than what you want to do next. The conversation about what action you want to take is meaningless unless it’s tied to a deeper purpose".
"You know, as you get older you understand; when you’re younger you think there are just lucky breaks but when you look back at the path of your life it’s pretty clear that something has a larger plan that you're often not aware of when you're in the middle of it".
"We’ve lost this idea of core gifts in the world. There are a few indigenous cultures that still have practises to identify gifts but it’s an idea that’s mostly lost in the world as the world is gotten industrialised. If we lived in a village 200 years ago people were connected by the knowledge of each other's gifts; they relied on each other for certain things and they were seen as wise about certain things and so people's identity was based on their uniqueness".
