sanitation Why Hygiene and Sanitation Matter More Than Bullets | Episode 382 When people think of survival, they often focus on stockpiling food, weapons, and ammunition. But historically, the biggest killer in collapse scenarios hasn’t been violence—it’s been disease. Poor sanitation and lack of hygiene have wiped out armies, devastated communities, and turned minor injuries into death sentences. In this episode, we’re diving deep into why hygiene and sanitation should be a top priority in your prepping plan. Water: The Foundation of Hygiene Clean water is the single most important factor in preventing disease. When infrastructure fails, water sources become contaminated, leading to deadly outbreaks of dysentery, cholera, and other waterborne illnesses. How to Prepare: Always store enough clean water for both drinking and hygiene. A gallon per person per day is the minimum. Have multiple purification methods: boiling, filtration systems like Berkey or Sawyer, chemical treatments (bleach, iodine, or purification tablets). Set up a rainwater collection system if possible, but ensure it is properly filtered. Waste Disposal When Plumbing Fails When the toilets stop flushing, waste management becomes a serious problem. If human waste isn’t properly disposed of, it can contaminate water sources and spread disease. How to Handle Waste: Latrine Setup: Dig a deep pit at least 200 feet from any water source. Cover waste with dirt or lime after each use. Composting Toilets: A DIY sawdust toilet can be a great alternative. Sawdust or peat moss helps break down waste naturally. Emergency Bucket Toilets: A 5-gallon bucket with a toilet seat lid, lined with heavy-duty trash bags, can be a short-term solution. Use sawdust, kitty litter, or ash to neutralize odors. Personal Hygiene in a Collapse Even in a long-term survival situation, staying clean is critical. Poor hygiene can lead to infections, rashes, and even life-threatening conditions. Alternative Hygiene Methods: Bathing Without Running Water: Use sponge baths with a washcloth, boiled water, and a small amount of soap. No-rinse wipes are another great option. DIY Soap & Natural Cleaners: Stockpile bar soap, but also learn to make soap from ashes and animal fat in case supplies run out. Dental Care Without Toothpaste: Brushing with baking soda, salt, or even chewing on twigs like miswak can help maintain oral hygiene. Dental infections can turn deadly quickly without antibiotics. First Aid & Wound Care in a Dirty World In a post-collapse world, even a small cut can become life-threatening if it gets infected. Without hospitals or antibiotics, hygiene in first aid becomes even more crucial. Preventing Infection: Stockpile Antiseptics: Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, iodine, and triple antibiotic ointment should be in every prepper’s kit. Keep Wounds Covered: Use clean bandages and change them frequently. Know How to Make Natural Antiseptics: Honey, garlic, and certain herbal poultices (like yarrow and plantain) have antibacterial properties. Dealing with Dead Bodies in a Collapse It’s an unpleasant reality, but mass casualties are a real possibility in a long-term collapse. Decomposing bodies spread disease rapidly, making proper handling crucial. Safe Practices: Avoid Direct Contact: Always wear gloves and a mask if handling bodies. Bury Deeply: Bodies should be buried at least 6 feet deep and 200 feet away from any water source. Cremation: If burial isn’t an option, controlled burning can be an alternative, but requires caution and a safe setup. Practical Steps to Take Now Hygiene and sanitation often get overlooked in prepping, but they’re just as essential as food and security. Here are some things you can do today: Stockpile Supplies: Soap, bleach, alcohol, feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, baking soda, toothbrushes, and floss should all be in your storage. Learn Traditional Hygiene Methods: Study how people in the past maintained cleanliness without modern conveniences. Build a Long-Term Sanitation Plan: If the grid goes down permanently, how will you handle waste and water purification? Plan now before it’s too late. Final Thoughts Bullets might keep you alive in a fight, but bad hygiene can take you out just as fast. In a world where medical help might not be available, preventing illness is just as important as defending yourself. Focus on keeping yourself and your environment clean, and you’ll have a much better chance of making it through any disaster. foraging Spring Foraging – Start Finding Wild Food Now! | Episode 381 Spring is finally here, and that means it’s prime time for foraging! Whether you’re a seasoned survivalist or just getting started, this is the perfect season to explore the wild food options growing all around you. From greens and berries to edible flowers and medicinal plants, nature is providing—if you know where to look. Why Foraging Matters Foraging isn’t just a fun hobby; it’s a crucial survival skill. Knowing what’s edible in your area can mean the difference between life and death in a collapse scenario. Even in everyday life, adding foraged foods to your diet increases self-sufficiency , reduces grocery bills, and improves your health with nutrient-dense wild foods. Getting Started With Foraging If you’re new to foraging, the first step is learning plant identification . The last thing you want to do is accidentally eat something toxic. Here are some ways to start: Get a Good Foraging Book Nothing beats a physical book when it comes to learning about wild edibles. Some great ones include: The Forager’s Harvest by Samuel Thayer Edible Wild Plants: Wild Foods from Dirt to Plate by John Kallas The Forgotten Home Apothecary (a great addition for those interested in medicinal plants) These books provide detailed photos, descriptions, and tips on how to safely identify, harvest, and prepare wild plants. Use YouTube to Learn From Experts Foraging is a hands-on skill, so watching experienced foragers walk through the process is invaluable. Check out channels like: Learn Your Land (Adam Haritan gives great plant breakdowns) Survival Russia (for a more bushcraft-focused approach) Green Deane’s Eat the Weeds (covers edible and medicinal plants in-depth) Watching these videos will help you see what plants look like in different seasons and how to properly harvest them. Use Plant Identification Apps Technology has come a long way, and apps like Seek by iNaturalist, PictureThis, and PlantNet can help you quickly identify plants on your property. While these apps aren’t always 100% accurate, they’re a great starting point when cross-referenced with books and expert advice. What to Forage in Spring Spring is one of the best times for foraging because many plants are young, tender, and at their most nutritious . Some great options to look for include: Dandelion – Leaves, flowers, and roots are all edible and packed with nutrients. Wild Onions and Garlic – Easy to spot by their strong scent, great for seasoning food. Chickweed – A mild green that can be eaten raw or cooked. Nettles – High in vitamins and great for soups or teas (just wear gloves!). Morel Mushrooms – A prized spring mushroom, but make sure you know how to identify them properly. Start in Your Own Backyard One of the best places to start foraging is right where you live . Walk around your yard or neighborhood and start identifying plants. Even in an urban environment, you’d be surprised what’s growing around sidewalks, parks, and abandoned lots. Final Thoughts Foraging is a lost skill that’s worth reviving , and spring is the best time to get started. Grab a good book, watch some videos, download an app, and start identifying the wild edibles around you. Not only will you gain food and medicine for free, but you’ll also develop a skill that could one day save your life. Get out there and start foraging! And as always, stay prepared and stay sharp. physical books Why Physical Books Matter | Episode 380 In an age where everything is digital, it’s easy to forget the value of a physical book. But when the grid goes down, the internet vanishes, and your devices run out of power, a well-stocked prepper library could mean the difference between life and death. I recently added The Forgotten Home Apothecary to my collection—a fantastic book on herbal medicine and self-sufficiency . This got me thinking about the importance of a solid prepper library and what categories of books every serious prepper should own. Why Physical Books Matter in a Collapse In a survival scenario, information is power. The internet won’t be there to look up how to purify water, treat an infection, or build a shelter. Even if you have digital books stored on a tablet or e-reader, what happens when the battery dies? EMPs, cyberattacks, or just a long-term power outage could render all your digital resources useless. Physical books don’t require electricity, can be read anytime, and won’t disappear due to a system crash. They’re reliable, durable, and can be shared with others. When the world is falling apart, having the right knowledge in your hands is priceless. Essential Categories for Your Prepper Library Survival Manuals Every prepper should own at least one solid survival manual. It doesn’t really matter which one, as most cover the same core skills : shelter-building, fire-making, foraging , navigation, and self-defense. Books like SAS Survival Handbook by John Wiseman or Bushcraft 101 by Dave Canterbury are great choices. Medical and First Aid Books When medical help isn’t an option, knowing how to handle injuries, illnesses, and emergencies is critical. A combination of modern medical knowledge and traditional remedies is the best approach. Modern Medicine: Books like Where There Is No Doctor by David Werner or The Survival Medicine Handbook by Joseph Alton provide step-by-step guides to treating injuries, infections, and common medical issues in a survival setting. Herbal and Natural Medicine: This is where The Forgotten Home Apothecary comes in. Having knowledge of herbal remedies, wild medicinal plants, and home-based treatments can supplement (or replace) conventional medicine when supplies run out. Other great books in this category include The Lost Book of Herbal Remedies by Claude Davis and Herbal Antibiotics by Stephen Harrod Buhner. Food Preservation and Foraging Knowing how to store and preserve food long-term is essential. Books on canning , dehydrating, and fermenting food ensure you can make supplies last. A great resource is Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving . Foraging books teach you how to find food in the wild when grocery stores are no longer an option. Edible Wild Plants by John Kallas and The Forager’s Harvest by Samuel Thayer are excellent guides for identifying and safely consuming wild edibles. Homesteading and Self-Sufficiency If you plan to ride out a collapse long-term, knowing how to raise livestock, grow food, and make your own supplies is critical. Books like The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It by John Seymour provide a wealth of knowledge on these topics. Final Thoughts Building a prepper library isn’t just about collecting books—it’s about ensuring you have the knowledge to survive when modern conveniences are gone. Physical books are immune to power outages, hacking, and obsolescence. They are your backup plan when technology fails. What books are in your prepper library? drones Drones in a Collapse: Friend, Foe, and Firepower | Episode 379 Drones have become an undeniable part of modern warfare, surveillance, and everyday life. In a post-collapse scenario, they will be a double-edged sword—used against you by hostile forces, but also providing an invaluable tool for preppers who know how to use them. Let’s break down the role of drones in a collapse, how to defend against them, and how to use them to your advantage. How Drones Will Be Used to Gather Intel on You In a collapse, drones will serve as the eyes of those in power—whether that be remnants of the government, local warlords, gangs, or even desperate individuals looking for an easy target. They will be used for surveillance and recon, scanning for movement, smoke, or signs of life to locate potential food and supply sources. If you’re lighting fires or running generators, you’re making yourself an easy target. Drones can also be used for tracking and targeting in a martial law situation, following individuals trying to evade checkpoints or locating survival groups for forced conscription or resource confiscation. Beyond that, they can be used for psychological warfare. The constant buzzing of drones overhead can keep you on edge, knowing someone is always watching. In a worst-case scenario, drones equipped with speakers could even broadcast warnings or demoralizing messages. If you’re in an area where drones are operating, assume that anything you do in the open is being recorded and cataloged. Shooting Down Drones with Birdshot – Effective or Not? If a drone is spying on you, your first instinct might be to shoot it down. A shotgun loaded with birdshot can be an effective countermeasure, but it comes with risks. Birdshot spreads quickly and can shred small commercial drones within 50 yards. Heavier loads like #4 or buckshot will work at greater distances, but slugs are overkill and harder to hit with. The downside is that every shot fired is a loud announcement of your location. If the drone is scouting for hostiles, taking it down could immediately bring trouble. In a full societal collapse, laws might not matter, but shooting down drones in a controlled emergency (like martial law) could bring heat from authorities. Use discretion before pulling the trigger. Sometimes, evasion and counter-surveillance techniques are better than engaging. The Risk of Engaging Military Drones Let’s be clear: if you take a shot at a military-grade drone, you’re inviting a world of hurt. These drones aren’t just surveillance tools—they’re battlefield assets capable of retaliation. Many military drones are armed. If you shoot one down, you might be marked for a follow-up airstrike or a ground response. Unlike civilian drones, military ones can see heat signatures, track movement, and even detect weapons. Just hiding in the woods won’t be enough. Some preppers might think about electronic warfare countermeasures, but these require high-tech gear and expertise. For most, the best defense is staying off the radar. In short—if you see a Predator drone circling, don’t play hero. Lay low and avoid drawing attention. Using Drones for Your Own Survival While drones can be a major threat, they can also be an incredible tool for preppers. If you’re the one with the drone, you have a serious tactical advantage. A drone with a camera can patrol your property, giving you an aerial view of threats before they get close. If you need to check out a roadblock, an abandoned store, or a potential enemy camp, sending a drone instead of putting yourself at risk is the smarter move. Drones can also serve as an early warning system, with motion alerts that detect movement at night. Some even have thermal imaging for spotting intruders. In a pinch, a drone could be used to distract attackers, lure them into a trap, or make them think they’re being watched by someone else. The key is to use drones intelligently. Keep them out of sight when not in use, don’t rely on them as your only defense, and always assume that others may be using them against you. Final Thoughts Drones will play a major role in any future collapse, whether as tools of oppression or valuable survival assets. Knowing when to hide, when to shoot, and when to use drones to your advantage could mean the difference between staying hidden and being hunted. Would you use drones in a collapse, or would you focus on avoiding them? Let me know in the comments! skills for the collapse Useful Skills for the Collapse | Episode 378 In a world where everything is conveniently available at the click of a button, it’s easy to overlook the importance of self-sufficiency. But what happens when supply chains break down stores close, and modern conveniences are no longer reliable? In a collapse scenario, those who have hands-on skills will not only survive but thrive. Today, we’re diving into some of the most useful skills you can develop to prepare for a post-collapse world: fixing things, blacksmithing, and brewing alcohol. These aren’t just useful for personal survival—they can also become valuable bartering tools in a world where traditional currency may lose its value. Fixing Things: The Power of Repair In a collapse situation, buying new items will become either impossible or extremely expensive. That means repairing what you already have will be a critical survival skill. Whether it’s fixing a broken generator, patching up a torn backpack, or keeping your vehicle running, the ability to repair things can set you apart from those who are struggling. Mechanical Repairs – Learning how to work on engines, small machines, and power tools will ensure you can maintain essential equipment. Basic Carpentry – Knowing how to fix furniture, doors, and basic structures will keep your shelter intact. Electrical Work – Understanding wiring and circuits can help you keep power running in off-grid setups. The more you know, the more you can barter with those who lack these skills but need something fixed. Even basic repair knowledge will be worth its weight in gold when new items are scarce. Blacksmithing: Crafting and Repairing Tools Blacksmithing might seem like a relic of the past, but when new tools become hard to find, having the ability to repair or create your own is a game-changer. Tool Maintenance – Axes, knives, and other essential tools will dull or break over time. A skilled blacksmith can keep them in working order. Weapon Crafting – In a world where self-defense is critical, making or repairing blades, spear tips, and even arrowheads can provide an advantage. Hardware Production – Nails, hinges, brackets, and other small but necessary items can be crafted with the right skills and forge setup. Setting up a small blacksmithing station doesn’t require a massive investment. A homemade forge, an anvil, and a few tools can get you started, and the skill will be invaluable in a long-term survival scenario. Brewing Alcohol: More Than Just a Drink Alcohol production has been a vital part of human civilization for centuries, not just for drinking but also for its medicinal and trade value. In a collapse scenario, the ability to brew beer, wine, or mead could make you one of the most sought-after people in your community. Bartering Power – Alcohol has always been a trade good, and in a world without liquor stores, a skilled brewer will have endless barter opportunities. Medicinal Uses – High-proof alcohol can be used for sterilization, wound cleaning, and even as a painkiller. Preservation – Alcohol can be used in tinctures to preserve medicinal herbs and plants. Starting a brewing operation doesn’t require fancy equipment. A few basic ingredients, some fermentation knowledge, and patience can lead to a valuable survival commodity. Become a Post-Collapse Asset Skills are more valuable than stockpiles. While having food, water, and supplies is critical, those resources eventually run out. Skills, however, last a lifetime and will keep you useful and in demand when everything else fails. By learning how to repair things, forge metal, and brew alcohol, you’re setting yourself up to not just survive but to thrive in a post-collapse world. Get started now, and when the world changes, you’ll be ready to adapt and succeed. black and gray markets Black Market: Bartering, Cryptocurrency, and the Dark Web | Episode 377 In a world where governments increasingly regulate financial transactions, preppers, and survivalists must consider alternative economies. Whether you’re dealing with economic collapse, excessive taxation, or authoritarian overreach, black markets and gray markets have always provided a means of survival. In this episode, we dive into three key aspects of the underground economy: bartering, cryptocurrency, and the dark web. Barter Networks: The Oldest Economy Before money existed, barter was the foundation of trade. In a collapse scenario, cash may lose its value, making goods and services the primary means of exchange. Having valuable barter items—food, medicine, tools, and skills—ensures you stay relevant in any economic downturn. How to Prepare for a Barter Economy: Stockpile high-demand items like medical supplies, fuel, and alcohol. Develop skills that people will need, such as repair work, first aid, or blacksmithing. Build a trusted barter network now, so you’re not scrambling when SHTF. Cryptocurrency: The Digital Black Market Governments and banks closely monitor financial transactions, but cryptocurrency offers an alternative. Bitcoin and Monero provide decentralized ways to store wealth, make purchases, and avoid financial surveillance. Pros and Cons of Using Crypto for Preppers: Can be used anonymously in many cases. No reliance on banks or government systems. Easily transferable across borders. Requires internet access. Volatility makes it a risky store of value. Governments are cracking down on anonymous transactions. If you’re considering crypto as a hedge against financial instability, start learning how to securely store and trade it now. Cold storage wallets and privacy-focused currencies like Monero can be useful tools. The Dark Web: The Digital Underground While the dark web often gets associated with illegal activity, it’s also a tool for privacy and free speech. Many whistleblowers, journalists, and individuals in oppressive regimes rely on it to communicate and trade without interference. Understanding the Dark Web (Without Breaking the Law): It’s an anonymous portion of the internet, accessed via special software like Tor. Not everything on the dark web is illegal—there are forums, marketplaces, and information hubs. Just like in-person black markets, trust and reputation are everything. While we’re not advocating illegal activity, understanding the existence of these networks can help you grasp how underground economies function. Why This Matters for Preppers Relying solely on government-approved financial systems and supply chains is a vulnerability. Preppers should be aware of alternative economic models before they need them. By diversifying your resources, gaining useful skills, and understanding how off-the-grid commerce works, you ensure greater independence in uncertain times. weather Preparing for Bad Weather| Episode 376 When disaster strikes, it’s often Mother Nature leading the charge. From hurricanes and blizzards to tornadoes and heat waves, bad weather can quickly turn from an inconvenience to a life-threatening situation. For preppers and survivalists, being ready for extreme weather isn’t just a good idea—it’s essential. Today, we’re diving into practical steps you can take to protect yourself, your home, and your loved ones when the skies turn dark. Understanding the Threats Bad weather comes in many forms, and each one presents unique challenges. Knowing what’s most likely to hit your region is the first step to preparedness. Hurricanes & Tropical Storms – Strong winds, flooding, and power outages are common. Tornadoes – These violent storms can rip through entire towns in minutes, leaving destruction in their wake. Blizzards & Ice Storms – Freezing temperatures, impassable roads, and power loss make winter storms dangerous. Heat Waves – Extreme heat can be just as deadly as cold, leading to dehydration and heatstroke. Flooding – Rising water can destroy homes, contaminate drinking supplies, and cut off escape routes. Wildfires – Dry conditions and high winds can spread flames rapidly, making evacuation necessary. Prepping Before the Storm Preparedness isn’t about reacting—it’s about being ready before a crisis hits. Here are some critical steps to take: Stock Up on Essentials – Have enough food, water, and medical supplies to last at least two weeks. Include batteries, flashlights, and backup power sources. Fortify Your Home – Secure windows, clear gutters, and remove loose objects from your yard that could become projectiles in high winds. Create a Family Emergency Plan – Everyone in your household should know what to do, where to go, and how to communicate if disaster strikes. Prepare a Bug-Out Bag – In some cases, staying put isn’t an option. Have a go-bag ready with essentials if evacuation is necessary. Stay Informed – Weather radios, apps, and emergency broadcasts can keep you updated on evolving conditions. Surviving the Storm Once the storm is upon you, staying calm and following your plan is key. Shelter in Place – If evacuation isn’t necessary, find the safest area in your home. Basements and interior rooms with no windows work best for tornadoes, while higher ground is safer in flood situations. Conserve Resources – If power is out, limit phone use, ration food, and avoid opening the fridge/freezer to keep food cold longer. Stay Connected – Use emergency radios or backup communication devices to stay informed on weather updates and emergency services. Recovery and Aftermath The danger isn’t always over when the storm passes. The aftermath can be just as hazardous. Assess the Damage – Check for structural issues, gas leaks, and downed power lines before re-entering your home. Beware of Floodwater – It can be contaminated with sewage and chemicals—avoid wading through it if possible. Help Your Community – If you’re in a position to help others, do so. Strong community ties make recovery easier. Final Thoughts Weather-related disasters are among the most common crises people face, yet they’re often underestimated. Taking the time to prepare now can mean the difference between survival and catastrophe. Whether it’s securing your home, having supplies on hand, or knowing when to evacuate, a little preparation goes a long way when the storm clouds roll in. alternative weapons Weapons Beyond Guns: The Best Alternative Self-Defense Tools | Episode 375 When it comes to self-defense, firearms are the ultimate tool—effective, reliable, and a force equalizer. However, not everyone can or wants to rely on guns in every situation. Whether due to legal restrictions, personal preference, or practicality, having alternative self-defense tools can be essential for survival and preparedness. Let’s explore some of the best options available and how they can fit into your overall self-defense strategy. Bladed Weapons: Knives and Beyond Knives are one of the most versatile self-defense tools, doubling as essential survival gear. A good fixed-blade knife , like the Ka-Bar or Cold Steel SRK, can be used for combat, utility tasks, and emergency situations. Folding knives are more discreet but require quick access and training to deploy effectively. For those wanting more reach, machetes and tomahawks can serve as both weapons and tools for chopping wood, clearing brush, or defending against an attacker. The added leverage makes them formidable in close-quarters combat. Blunt Weapons: The Power of Impact Blunt weapons are often overlooked, but they are devastating in the right hands. Baseball bats, batons, and clubs can deliver powerful strikes that disable attackers quickly. Expandable batons, like the ASP Tactical Baton, are compact and easy to carry while offering increased reach over knives. Improvised blunt weapons, such as a sturdy flashlight (e.g., SureFire or Maglite), serve a dual purpose—lighting your way while also functioning as an impact weapon in a pinch. Bows and Crossbows: Silent and Deadly While firearms dominate long-range self-defense, bows and crossbows provide a silent alternative. Modern compound bows and crossbows deliver incredible stopping power and are legal in areas where firearms might not be an option. Though they have slower reload times, their ability to take down threats without making a sound makes them valuable tools in a survival scenario. Pepper Spray and Chemical Defenses Non-lethal but highly effective, pepper spray (OC spray) incapacitates attackers by causing extreme irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Brands like Sabre and Fox Labs offer compact canisters with high potency. Bear spray, a more powerful variant, can provide even greater stopping power in an emergency. CS gas and other irritants, such as wasp spray (though not designed for self-defense), can also serve as deterrents if used correctly. Tactical Pens and Small Impact Weapons Tactical pens, kubotans, and other discreet impact weapons can be carried almost anywhere, even in locations where larger weapons are prohibited. These tools focus force into small areas, allowing for effective strikes to pressure points and vital areas. Improvised Weapons: Using What’s Available Survival often means making do with what you have. Heavy-duty belts can be used as a garrote or striking weapon. Car keys, screwdrivers, and even a rolled-up magazine can become makeshift defensive tools in a life-or-death situation. Learning to identify and use everyday objects for self-defense can give you an edge when traditional weapons aren’t available. Training: The Key to Effective Defense Regardless of the weapon you choose, training is essential. A well-trained person with a knife, baton, or even empty hands can be far more effective than an untrained person with a gun. Consider taking self-defense classes, learning martial arts, and practicing with your chosen weapons regularly. Conclusion: Guns Are Best, But Have a Backup Plan Firearms are the most effective self-defense tools, but they aren’t always an option. Whether due to legal restrictions, ammunition shortages, or close-quarters combat where a gun might not be practical, having alternative self-defense tools can be a lifesaver. By equipping yourself with a combination of knives, blunt weapons, chemical deterrents, and training, you can ensure that you’re prepared for any situation where a gun isn’t available or practical. Always prioritize situational awareness , preparedness, and training—because the best weapon is the one you know how to use. Finding unwoke media Finding Unwoke Media | Episode 374 What Does “Woke” Mean in Media? The term “woke” has evolved over the years, originally meaning an awareness of social injustices. However, in entertainment, it has come to represent media that prioritizes political messaging over storytelling. This often leads to forced diversity, the rewriting of beloved classics, and characters that serve as ideological mouthpieces rather than compelling figures. Many people find that woke media sacrifices good writing and world-building in favor of pushing a narrative. Instead of natural character development, these stories often feel like lectures. If you’re tired of media that prioritizes message over entertainment, you’re not alone. How Woke Culture Has Changed TV & Movies Over the past decade, there has been a noticeable shift in film and television. Classic archetypes like strong heroes, traditional families, and morally complex characters have been replaced by checklists for representation. While diversity in media can be a positive thing when done right, forced inclusivity often leads to uninspired storytelling that doesn’t resonate with audiences. Hollywood studios have increasingly prioritized political correctness, resulting in remakes and reboots that erase original characters or change fundamental aspects of beloved stories. This has led to a backlash, with many viewers seeking out older content or alternative creators who focus on storytelling first. How to Fight Woke Media and Find Entertainment You Actually Enjoy If you’re looking to avoid agenda-driven entertainment, there are several ways to do so: 1. Rediscover Classic TV & Movies One of the best ways to escape modern woke media is to revisit older movies and TV shows. Many pre-2010 productions focused on storytelling rather than ideological messaging. Whether it’s classic action movies, sitcoms, or animated series, the past offers a treasure trove of great content that doesn’t feel like a lecture. 2. Support Independent and Unwoke Creators A growing number of independent filmmakers, authors, and content creators are pushing back against the mainstream entertainment industry. Platforms like Rumble, Locals, and Substack have become popular spaces for creators who prioritize good storytelling over agenda-driven content. Some examples include: Daily Wire Entertainment – Producing movies and TV shows that focus on traditional storytelling. Iron Age Media – A movement of indie authors and filmmakers creating new, non-woke content. YouTube Creators – Many reviewers and independent filmmakers are providing alternatives to Hollywood’s messaging-driven entertainment. 3. Explore Alternative Streaming Services While Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max continue to push woke content, alternative streaming platforms are emerging with more balanced storytelling. Services like Tubi, Pure Flix, and Daily Wire+ offer a range of entertainment that doesn’t conform to the mainstream Hollywood agenda. 4. Read More Books & Comics Hollywood may be saturated with woke narratives, but the world of books and comics is still a goldmine of diverse perspectives. Independent publishers and self-published authors often focus on creating compelling characters and immersive worlds without forcing ideology. 5. Follow the Money: Stop Supporting Companies That Push Woke Agendas If you’re tired of Hollywood’s direction, the best way to make a change is to vote with your wallet. Avoid movies, shows, and products from companies that consistently inject politics into their media. Instead, support those who focus on quality storytelling. Conclusion: Entertainment Should Entertain At the end of the day, entertainment should be about escapism, adventure, and compelling characters—not political indoctrination. If you find yourself frustrated with modern media, there are plenty of alternatives out there. By supporting independent creators, revisiting classics, and seeking out media that prioritizes storytelling over messaging, you can still enjoy great entertainment without the agenda. communication The Most Overlooked Survival Skill – Communication | Episode 373 When people think about survival skills , they often focus on fire-starting, food storage, and self-defense. However, one of the most underrated and essential skills is communication. In a survival situation, whether you’re in a disaster scenario, bugging out, or just navigating everyday emergencies, how well you communicate can determine your success—or your failure. Verbal Communication in High-Stress Situations Being able to articulate your thoughts clearly and concisely under pressure is critical. When tensions are high, people often panic, misinterpret instructions, or shut down. Having strong verbal communication skills allows you to lead effectively, coordinate with others, and avoid misunderstandings that could put lives at risk. Whether you’re working with a survival group or trying to diffuse a confrontation, knowing how to communicate effectively can make all the difference. The Power of Non-Verbal Communication Sometimes, you won’t be able to rely on words. Non-verbal communication, such as hand signals, facial expressions, and body language, becomes vital when silence is necessary. In military and tactical settings, teams often use hand signals to communicate without giving away their position. Even in a disaster setting, a simple nod or hand gesture can convey messages clearly when shouting isn’t an option. Emergency Signaling for Help If you’re lost in the wilderness or a collapsed urban environment, knowing how to signal for help can be lifesaving. Whistles, mirrors, and brightly colored clothing can be used to attract rescuers’ attention. Smoke signals and SOS patterns using light or sound can be understood universally. Many preppers focus on stockpiling supplies but neglect learning the basics of signaling for rescue. Radios and Alternative Communication Methods In a grid-down scenario, traditional communication methods like cell phones and the internet might not be an option. Having a HAM radio, CB radio, or other alternative means of long-distance communication can keep you connected when everything else fails. Learning how to use these tools, acquiring the proper licenses (where applicable), and setting up a communication plan with family or group members is crucial. How Poor Communication Can Put You in Danger One of the biggest risks in a survival situation is miscommunication. If you fail to communicate effectively, you might: Give unclear instructions that lead to dangerous mistakes. Be misunderstood by other survivors, potentially leading to conflict. Struggle to coordinate group efforts efficiently, leading to chaos and failure. Improving Your Survival Communication Skills Practice with your group. Regularly train in verbal and non-verbal communication techniques. Establish clear protocols for emergencies. Learn de-escalation tactics. Avoiding a fight is often better than winning one. Knowing how to talk people down from a confrontation is a powerful skill. Develop a backup communication plan. If cell service is unavailable, what’s your next move? Do you have a radio? A pre-planned meeting spot? A coded message system? Final Thoughts Communication is the glue that holds any survival plan together. Without it, even the best preppers will struggle to execute their plans effectively. In today’s episode, we dive deeper into how you can develop this often-overlooked skill and ensure you’re prepared for any situation. Listen now and take your survival communication to the next level! defense Why Everyone Should Learn to Fight – The Case for Self-Defense Training | Episode 372 Many people believe they will never find themselves in a violent situation, but the reality is that danger can arise when least expected. Whether it’s a mugging, an aggressive road rage encounter, or an emergency where physical intervention is necessary, having even basic fighting skills can be the difference between survival and victimhood. Self-defense isn’t about looking for trouble—it’s about being prepared for when trouble finds you. Training in a martial art or combat sport gives you the confidence to handle yourself under pressure and increases your ability to assess and respond to threats effectively. In a world where unpredictability is the only certainty, learning how to fight is an investment in personal security and resilience. The Psychological and Physical Benefits of Fighting Experience Beyond the obvious advantage of being able to defend yourself, fighting experience brings a host of other benefits. Reduces fear and panic in stressful situations – If you’ve never been punched before, the first time will likely send your body into a state of shock. Regular training teaches you to manage adrenaline and think clearly under duress. Improves fitness and reflexes – Fighting is one of the best full-body workouts you can do. It builds strength, endurance, flexibility, and quick reaction times. Boosts confidence and mental toughness – The ability to fight makes you feel more capable in all aspects of life. Overcoming sparring sessions and hard training builds a mindset that translates into everyday challenges. Teaches discipline and focus – Whether it’s boxing, jiu-jitsu, or Muay Thai, training in a combat sport instills discipline, patience, and respect for controlled aggression. Martial Arts vs. Boxing vs. Street Fighting – What’s the Best Option? There are many ways to learn how to fight, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. The key is finding a system that suits your needs and lifestyle. Martial Arts (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, Karate, Judo, etc.) – These disciplines focus on technique, discipline, and practical applications of self-defense. Jiu-Jitsu, for example, teaches grappling and submissions, while Krav Maga is designed for real-world combat. Boxing & Muay Thai – If you want to learn striking, boxing is excellent for punches, head movement, and footwork, while Muay Thai incorporates kicks, knees, and elbows. Both are great for real-world confrontations where striking may be necessary. Wrestling & Jiu-Jitsu – If you’re looking for non-lethal control, wrestling and jiu-jitsu are invaluable. Many real-life fights end up on the ground, where these skills can help neutralize an opponent without excessive force. Street-Focused Training (Krav Maga, Self-Defense Classes, etc.) – These systems focus on survival rather than sport. Krav Maga, for instance, emphasizes quick, effective responses to threats without rules or sportsmanship considerations. How to Get Started with Self-Defense Training If you’ve never trained before, don’t worry—starting is easier than you think. Here are some ways to take the first step: Join a local gym or martial arts academy – Most cities have boxing gyms, BJJ schools, or self-defense classes that cater to beginners. Take online courses – If in-person training isn’t an option, there are high-quality instructional videos available from professional fighters and trainers. Practice solo drills at home – Shadowboxing, reaction drills, and bag work are all ways to build skills without a partner. Integrate training into your preparedness mindset – Just like prepping your food and supplies, self-defense should be part of your survival skillset. The Fight You Avoid Is the Best One While knowing how to fight is essential, the best fight is the one that never happens. Awareness, de-escalation, and avoiding dangerous situations are far more effective than any punch or kick. However, if you do find yourself in a situation where fighting is necessary, having trained even a little can make all the difference. For preppers and survivalists, self-defense training isn’t just an option—it’s a responsibility. Being prepared means being able to protect yourself, your family, and your community. So, whether it’s boxing, BJJ, or a self-defense course, make training a part of your preparedness plan. You never know when you might need it. bugging out on foot Bugging Out on Foot: What’s Actually Possible? | Episode 371 When disaster strikes, the idea of grabbing a bag and heading out on foot into the wilderness is a common prepper fantasy. But how realistic is it? The truth is, bugging out on foot is incredibly demanding, and without proper planning, it can turn into a death march rather than a survival plan. The Physical Realities of Bugging Out on Foot The first thing to consider is the sheer physical exertion involved. Walking long distances with a loaded pack is far more difficult than most people realize. Even a well-conditioned person can struggle with rough terrain, extreme weather , and exhaustion. If you’re not used to hiking long distances under weight, you might find yourself burning out quickly. Building endurance, practicing with your gear, and understanding your own physical limits are critical before deciding that bugging out on foot is a viable plan. What to Pack and What to Leave Behind Packing the right gear makes all the difference. A well-balanced bug-out bag should include essentials like food, water purification, shelter, fire-starting tools, and medical supplies. However, weight is your biggest enemy. The temptation to overpack can lead to fatigue and slow you down, increasing your chances of failure. A good rule of thumb is to test your bag by taking it on a full-day hike. If you struggle, reassess what’s truly necessary and cut out anything nonessential. The Challenges of Finding Shelter and Water Even if you have the endurance to travel on foot, you need to think about where you’ll sleep and how you’ll stay hydrated. Depending on your environment, finding a safe place to rest could be difficult, and exposure can be a bigger killer than hunger. Water sources may not always be where you expect, and in a collapse scenario, rivers and streams may be contaminated. Knowing how to navigate using maps and a compass, identifying safe drinking sources, and setting up efficient shelters quickly are all crucial skills . Security Concerns on the Move Another overlooked aspect of bugging out on foot is security. Being on the move makes you vulnerable, whether to desperate people looking for supplies or to wild animals in remote areas. Traveling in a group can provide safety in numbers, but it also requires coordination and increases the need for resources. Stealth, avoiding heavily populated routes, and having a self-defense plan should be part of your strategy. The Reality Check: Is It Really Feasible? For most people, bugging out on foot should be a last resort, not a primary plan. It’s physically exhausting, resource-intensive, and full of unknowns. A more realistic approach is having a designated bug-out location with supplies already in place and a well-thought-out route to get there, preferably using a vehicle if possible. However, if you do need to travel on foot, preparation is key. Training, testing your gear, and planning multiple fallback locations can increase your chances of survival. Final Thoughts Bugging out on foot is not impossible, but it’s a grueling challenge that should not be romanticized. If you’re serious about this option, train for it. Go on regular hikes with your bug-out bag, learn wilderness survival skills, and develop multiple strategies for shelter, water, and security. The more prepared you are, the better your chances of making it through when things go south. Incapacitated Planning for Debilitating Sickness in a Collapse | Episode 370 In a survival situation, we often focus on external threats—food shortages, civil unrest, natural disasters—but what happens if you are the weak link? If you or your spouse are too sick to function, your carefully laid survival plans could fall apart. Today, we’re diving into the critical topic of prepping for debilitating sickness and ensuring your household can still function if one or more members are incapacitated. Why You Need a Plan for Sickness We take our health for granted until it’s gone. Even a simple flu can make basic survival tasks impossible, and more serious conditions like infections, injuries, or chronic illness can bring your ability to function to a standstill. In a collapse scenario, there’s no 911, no pharmacy runs, and no doctor’s visits. You must plan ahead. Loss of Mobility & Functionality – If you’re the primary prepper in your household, who takes over if you’re down? Medical Supplies & Care – Do you have enough meds, antibiotics, or home remedies to manage illness without a hospital? Survival Chores & Responsibilities – Who keeps food stocked, defends the home, or filters water if you’re bedridden? Documenting Essential Information If you’re out of commission, your spouse, kids, or group members need to know how to step in. Have a physical binder with the following critical information: Medical History & Medications – List current prescriptions, dosages, allergies, and past medical conditions. Daily Survival Tasks – Instructions on food storage, water purification, defense measures, and emergency contacts. Financial & Legal Info – Access to cash reserves, crypto wallets, bartering goods, or any hidden supply caches. Emergency Protocols – What to do in case of worsening illness, injury, or death. Building Redundancy in Your Preps The best survival groups ensure that no single person is irreplaceable . That means cross-training your family or survival group in essential skills so that no one person carries the entire burden. Food Prep & Cooking – If one person is the main cook, others should know how to prepare meals from stored goods. Water & Sanitation – Everyone should know how to purify water and manage waste safely. Security & Defense – Even if your spouse isn’t the “protector,” they need basic firearm and home defense skills. First Aid & Medical Care – Everyone should know CPR, how to treat infections, and how to administer basic meds. Stockpiling for Sickness While most preppers focus on food and ammo, medical preparedness is just as important . Your supply stash should include: Over-the-Counter Meds – Pain relievers, fever reducers, anti-diarrheals, decongestants, and antihistamines. Antibiotics – Stock up on fish antibiotics or other alternatives in case of bacterial infections. Electrolytes & Hydration Packs – A bad flu or stomach illness can cause dangerous dehydration. Herbal & Natural Remedies – Honey, garlic, elderberry, and other natural antivirals and immune boosters. Sanitation Supplies – Gloves, masks, bleach, soap, and disinfectants to prevent the spread of illness. Long-Term Considerations If sickness lasts for weeks or months, you need long-term solutions : Alternative Care & Treatments – Learn about natural medicine, acupuncture, or home remedies. Mental Resilience – Isolation and illness can lead to depression; mental health care is just as vital as physical care. Backup Plans – If you can’t recover, what happens next? Have contingency plans for leadership and group survival. Final Thoughts Prepping isn’t just about stockpiling gear—it’s about being realistic . A single illness could throw your entire survival plan into chaos. Have a plan, train your family, document everything, and stock up on critical medical supplies. Because in a true collapse, no one is coming to save you. Tune in to Episode 370 of the Survivalpunk Podcast , where we break down this topic in detail and share real-world solutions to keep your survival group prepared for anything. tax free Tax-Free Living: Legal Ways to Keep More of Your Money | Episode 369 In uncertain times, keeping as much of your hard-earned money as possible is a smart move. While taxes are unavoidable in many aspects of life, there are completely legal ways to minimize what you owe. For preppers and survivalists, finding ways to operate outside the heavily taxed mainstream economy can be a game-changer. Here’s how you can legally reduce your tax burden and keep more of your money. 1. The Power of the Second-Hand Market One of the easiest ways to avoid sales tax is by purchasing used goods. Buying from sources like: Yard sales Facebook Marketplace Flea markets Craigslist In most states, private sales between individuals are not subject to sales tax. This means you can get high-quality tools, equipment, and supplies without the added cost that comes with new retail purchases. 2. Bartering: The Original Tax-Free Economy Bartering is an age-old system that allows you to trade goods and services without exchanging cash. This avoids income tax and sales tax in many cases. Some effective ways to barter include: Exchanging skills (e.g., plumbing work for homegrown food) Trading gear or supplies Joining local barter networks However, be aware that the IRS technically requires barter income to be reported if done through an organized barter exchange. Informal, one-on-one trades are much harder to track. 3. Utilizing the Gift Tax Loophole Did you know you can receive up to $18,000 per year (2024 limit) from an individual as a gift without it being taxable? This is a powerful way for families to transfer wealth without triggering income taxes. If structured correctly, multiple family members can contribute, helping you acquire assets without tax consequences. 4. Living Below the Tax Radar Many people don’t realize that if you keep your income under a certain level, you may not owe federal income tax at all. For 2024, the standard deduction for individuals is $14,600 , meaning if you earn less than that, you won’t owe federal income tax. Some ways to minimize taxable income include: Taking advantage of tax deductions and credits Earning in non-traditional ways like bartering Keeping some earnings in non-reportable cash or crypto (legally) 5. Homesteading and Tax Breaks If you own land, there are multiple ways to use homesteading laws to reduce your tax burden: Many states offer property tax exemptions for agricultural land. Homesteading expenses such as livestock, gardening supplies, and equipment may qualify for deductions if structured properly. Forming a small business or LLC can open doors to additional tax write-offs. 6. Relocating to a No-Income-Tax State Some states, like Texas, Florida, and Tennessee , have no state income tax , making them ideal for those wanting to legally reduce their tax burden. Additionally, states like Oregon and New Hampshire don’t have sales tax, allowing you to buy goods tax-free. For those who travel frequently, the “snowbird strategy” (spending half the year in a no-tax state) can be used to claim residency in a tax-friendly state while still enjoying the best of both worlds. 7. Buying in Bulk and Avoiding Sales Tax Many essential survival items, like food and medical supplies, are sales-tax exempt in some states. Other strategies include: Taking advantage of “Tax-Free Shopping Days” in certain states. Buying from tax-free online retailers (or those based in tax-free states). Using wholesale club memberships like Costco or Sam’s Club to purchase in bulk and minimize tax costs. 8. Cryptocurrencies and Digital Currencies Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin offer ways to conduct transactions outside the traditional financial system. While the IRS has cracked down on reporting requirements, peer-to-peer transactions using privacy-focused coins like Monero remain difficult to track. Key takeaways: Crypto transactions under $600 may not require reporting (subject to change). Using decentralized exchanges and wallets can increase financial privacy. Be aware of evolving crypto tax laws to stay compliant. 9. Living Off-Grid to Reduce Taxable Expenses By reducing reliance on taxable utilities and services, you can cut costs and taxes at the same time: Many states offer solar energy tax credits and rebates. Collecting rainwater and growing your own food reduces taxable purchases. Living in rural areas with lower property tax rates can lead to significant savings. 10. The Danger Zone: What NOT to Do While there are plenty of legal ways to reduce taxes, it’s important to avoid risky strategies that could trigger an audit or legal trouble. Some key points: Tax avoidance (legal) is different from tax evasion (illegal). Failing to report large cash transactions can flag IRS scrutiny. If you run a business, ensure you’re following tax guidelines for deductions and earnings. Final Thoughts Preppers and survivalists know the importance of being smart with resources, and that includes minimizing unnecessary tax burdens . By shopping smart, utilizing barter, leveraging homestead laws, and understanding tax-friendly financial strategies, you can legally keep more of your money while maintaining a self-sufficient lifestyle. bartering Bartering in a Collapse | Episode 368 In a post-collapse world, traditional currency may become worthless overnight. When supply chains break down, people will need alternative ways to acquire essential goods and services. This is where bartering—trading items and skills instead of money—becomes a critical survival strategy. In this episode of the Survivalpunk Podcast, we explore the fundamentals of bartering, what makes a good trade item, and how to negotiate effectively in a world where every resource matters. Why Bartering Matters in a Collapse Bartering is one of the oldest forms of commerce, and in a survival situation, it could become the primary means of obtaining what you need. Without a functioning economy, having barterable goods and skills can mean the difference between thriving and struggling. Key reasons bartering is essential: Money loses value – When hyperinflation or economic collapse hits, paper currency becomes useless. Supply shortages – Items that were once abundant become scarce, increasing their trade value. Building community resilience – Establishing a barter network strengthens local ties and improves chances of survival. Self-sufficiency enhancement – The ability to trade skills or goods allows you to maximize your resources. What Makes a Good Barter Item? Not all items hold the same value in a bartering economy. High-demand, low-supply goods will always be the most sought after. Here are some of the best barter items to consider stockpiling: Food & Water – Canned goods, dried foods, MREs, and water purification supplies are always valuable. Medical Supplies – Bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, antibiotics, and first-aid kits. Ammunition & Firearms Accessories – In a security-conscious world, ammunition will be a top trade item. Fuel & Energy Sources – Gasoline, propane, solar chargers, and batteries. Alcohol & Tobacco – Even if you don’t use them, these items hold high trade value. Hygiene & Sanitation – Soap, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and toilet paper. Tools & Repair Kits – Multi-tools, knives, sewing kits, and basic hand tools. Skills & Knowledge – If you can repair, build, or heal, you have a valuable service to trade. How to Negotiate a Fair Trade Bartering is not just about what you have but how well you can negotiate. Here are some critical strategies to ensure a successful barter exchange: Know the Value – Understand what your items are worth based on scarcity and necessity. Start Higher, Settle Lower – Always ask for more than you expect to get, leaving room for negotiation. Trade in Person When Possible – Face-to-face exchanges reduce the risk of fraud. Build Trust and Reputation – Being known as a fair trader will make future deals easier. Diversify Your Offerings – If one item isn’t wanted, having a variety of trade goods increases your chances of a deal. Barter Networks & Security Concerns While bartering can be a lifesaver, it also comes with risks. Knowing how to trade safely is just as important as having the right goods. Set up a trusted barter network – Trading within a reliable group reduces the risk of bad deals or theft. Avoid revealing all your supplies – Showing too much could make you a target. Trade in secure locations – Meeting in neutral, controlled areas prevents potential ambushes. Be cautious with high-value trades – Larger trades attract attention; discretion is key. Final Thoughts In a world without money, bartering becomes an essential skill. The ability to trade wisely, assess value, and negotiate effectively will be as crucial as any other survival tactic. Preparing now—by stockpiling tradeable goods and learning valuable skills—ensures you’ll be ready for any economic collapse. What are your top barter items?
