Does the Senior Leadership Know Your Name? Do you know those moments at work when you feel like blending into the wallpaper? You're this hidden gem, but no one has the map to find you. Yeah, I've been there, and trust me, so many of the fantastic people I talk to feel the same way. Whenever someone like you shares their story with me, I always think, 'Wow, if only more people knew just how awesome they are.' You’ve got all these amazing talents and ideas, but sometimes it feels like you're whispering in a crowded football stadium. Today, I’m going to dive deep into this topic. It's not just about getting noticed at work but about celebrating all the cool things that make you YOU. Remember, it's not always about the big office or the fancy title. It's about making waves, leaving your mark, and creating your unique magic. So, if you've ever felt like you’re playing small, grab a coffee or a cup of tea, and let's chat. Because you, my friend, are meant for a more expansive career and life. It is possible! How Did I Become Known? I became “known” for my focus on our customers and deep technical and system focus. This didn’t happen overnight… I spent ten years as an Enlisted Sailor, working as a systems technician Later, I became a defense acquisition expert. I had opportunities to work at organizations where I was directly responsible for the manpower, training, and sustainment of the systems. When working at an organization leading Defense Acquisition efforts, I was directly responsible for developing the modern version of the program I was a technician for in my younger days. Eventually, I had the opportunity to work at an organization that greatly expanded my knowledge, but where there was an abundance of people who understood the training and even a good amount who understood manpower and manning, but a minimal number who understood the entire spectrum of taking a new technical requirement for a capability and transforming it into a powerful system out in an operational environment. Still.. I always remembered what it was like to be a young Enlisted person or a young Naval Officer who didn’t have the network or understanding of budgets, programs, available support, and how it all came together. Some people cared about the Fleet without my expertise, and some had exquisite expertise without understanding what it was like to be a Sailor. I used my combination of experiences and went ALL IN and became known for making sure our customers (the Sailors) have what they need to conduct their missions, in a MAJOR WAY. Does it Matter if You are Known at Work? For many reasons, it is essential to become "known" for something in a large organization. Here are a few of the most important ones: It can help you get ahead. When you are known for your skills and expertise, you are more likely to be promoted and given more opportunities. It can help you build relationships. When people know you and what you do, they are more likely to want to work with you. This can lead to new opportunities and collaborations. It can give you a voice. When you are known, you have a platform to share your ideas and insights. This can help you make a difference in the organization and the world. It can make you more marketable. If you are known for your skills and expertise, you will be more attractive to other organizations. This can give you more options and opportunities in your career. It can boost your confidence. When you are known for something, it can give you a sense of accomplishment and confidence. This can help you succeed in your career and in life. Of course, there are also some challenges to becoming known in a large organization. It can take time and effort to build a reputation. You may also need to overcome the challenges of being an introvert in a corporate setting. But if you are willing to put in the work, becoming known for something can be a valuable asset to your career. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE NOT KNOWN? There are a few signs that you may not be known in a large organization: People don't know your name. This is the most obvious sign. If people don't know your name, they probably know little about you or your work. You're not invited to meetings or events. If you're not invited to important meetings or events, it's a sign that people don't see you as a critical player in the organization. Your ideas are ignored. If you share your ideas and no one notices, it's a sign that people don't value your contributions. You're not considered for promotions or new opportunities. If you're not being considered for promotions or new opportunities, it's a sign that people don't see you as a high-potential employee. You feel like an outsider. If you feel like you don't belong in the organization, it's a sign that you're not known or connected to the people there. Here are some specific things you can do to become known in a large organization: Find your niche and become an expert. What are you passionate about? What are you good at? Focus on developing your skills and knowledge in this area, and become known as the go-to person for that topic. This could involve writing articles, speaking at conferences, or volunteering to lead projects. This also means staying current on the latest trends and developments and sharing knowledge. Get involved in projects that are visible to senior leaders. This could involve volunteering for stretch assignments or leading cross-functional teams. This is a great way to meet people from other departments and learn about different business areas. It also shows that you can work with others outside your comfort zone. Network with people in your field. Attend industry events, connect with people on LinkedIn, and reach out to people you admire—network with people in your field. Attend industry events, connect with people on LinkedIn, and reach out to people you admire. The more people you know, the more likely you will be heard. Be a mentor or sponsor. Helping others is a great way to build relationships and positively impact the organization. You demonstrate your leadership skills and commitment to the company when you mentor or sponsor someone. Be visible and accessible. Make sure people know who you are and what you do. Don't be afraid to speak up in meetings or share your ideas. The more visible you are, the more likely people are to know who you are and what you do. Volunteer for stretch assignments. This is a great way to get noticed by senior leaders. People will notice your abilities when you take on challenging projects and deliver results. Be confident. Believe in yourself and your abilities. If you don't believe in yourself, no one else will. Be positive and enthusiastic. People are drawn to those who are positive and passionate about their work. If you can do these things, you will be well on your way to becoming known in a large organization. ACTIVITY Choose 2-3 ideas from this article and begin to implement them. For example, volunteer for a Cross-Organizational Team, ask someone more junior if they would like a mentor, or identify your top three strengths and then brainstorm ways that you might be able to use them more robustly in your current organization. I have a robust activity I take my clients through to get after this in my executive coaching program – it is eye-opening when they realize all they have to offer, yet they have been holding back in many ways that they weren’t aware of. CONCLUSION It's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to becoming known in a large organization. The most important thing is to be yourself and to focus on doing great work. If you do that, people will notice you. Here are some additional tips that may be helpful for introverted women: Find a mentor or sponsor who can help you navigate the organization and advocate for you. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Many people will help you succeed, so don't hesitate to reach out. Be patient. Building a reputation and becoming known in a large organization takes time. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results overnight. 1 Crafting Your Unique Career Narrative: The Power of Owning and Sharing Your Professional Journey 20:20
Why should you write your unique career narrative? I've got a very special topic for you today, one that’s close to my heart: 'Crafting Your Unique Career Narrative: The Power of Owning and Sharing Your Professional Journey.' I sincerely believe that understanding and embracing your unique journey can be a catalyst for phenomenal growth in your career. You have a unique journey filled with challenges you've overcome, successes you brought to life, lessons you’ve learned, and so many adventures. You have strong passions and beliefs; you have your powerful WHY, something that’s at the heart of everything you do. When you are crystal clear about what you believe in and who you are, not to mention when you are who you want to be, it puts your future path and possibilities into focus. And if you are like me, when you get the opportunity to work on projects that are 100% aligned with your desired career narrative, it’s like putting gasoline on a motivational fire – I could work non-stop on such efforts. They seem to recharge my energy like a Tesla battery, haha. I have a feeling you know exactly what I’m talking about. The true magic happens when you begin to recognize the value of your own journey – when you fully embrace it as a mix of all that is wonderfully you. It’s when you’re able to confidently share it in various ways that it can and will help others to see who you are and all that you are capable of – not to mention that you’ll be able to help others find their way because you are willing to share your path. You know I come from the land of abundance and believe there is enough success for everyone – you have to be willing to move toward your version of success. As your executive coach – that’s precisely what I’m here to help you do. But first, a little story about how I became clear about my career narrative... I first realized that I did have a “personal brand,” that I wanted to have this brand and that I decided to lean wholly into that brand. Project management Navy – Fleet, systems-focus Reba “I’m TAMI, just Tami.” This is who I am, and no matter what title I have, I will use my unique skills to make the impact I’ve been charged or inspired to create in the world. The clarity that has brought me is that I will not accept jobs or positions or stay in jobs or positions that aren’t aligned with my passion or purpose. Due to the clarity I have about who I am and who I want to be – I have created that exact career both in my full-time position and my executive coaching business. I wake up every day and cannot believe the opportunities I have cultivated that allow me to make such a broad impact – one that genuinely could and likely will impact the entire world. What impact would you love to have in the world? Can you imagine that reality? If so… that is my #1 mission – to make it as accurate for you as it has become for me. It is possible! Let’s start with the reason you’d want to craft your unique career narrative. First, It Establishes Your Personal Brand: Your narrative, your journey, tells the world who you are, what you've been through, and what you stand for. A personal brand is essentially the perception or image of an individual based on their experiences, expertise, actions, values, and overall personal and professional narrative. It's how others see and understand you in a professional capacity. Just as businesses craft brands to represent their products, services, and core values, individuals craft personal brands to represent themselves. How Your Narrative Helps in Establishing Your Personal Brand: Authenticity: Your narrative is unique to you. No one else has experienced the exact same combination of events, emotions, challenges, and triumphs that you have. Sharing this narrative in an authentic manner forms the bedrock of a genuine personal brand. Consistency: Your narrative provides a consistent thread to your identity. Whether it's about resilience shown during tough times, innovation in problem-solving, or passion for a particular cause, the narrative offers consistency in messaging and perception. Differentiation: In a world filled with professionals, what makes you stand out? Your narrative does. By sharing unique experiences and perspectives, you differentiate yourself from others in your field. Value Proposition: Your narrative highlights the value you bring to the table. For instance, someone who has transitioned between diverse roles might bring interdisciplinary knowledge. Someone who has faced significant professional challenges might bring unparalleled problem-solving skills. Emotional Connection: People resonate with stories. By sharing your personal and professional journey, including both highs and lows, you create an emotional connection with your audience. This connection makes you more memorable and relatable. Key Elements in Crafting Your Personal Brand through Your Narrative: Clarity: Be clear about who you are and what you stand for. Your values, beliefs, and experiences should be evident in your narrative. Visibility: It's not enough to just have a personal brand; it needs to be seen, make it part of who you are. Share your story at job interviews (in an appropriate manner, write professional articles on platforms where you believe your knowledge or those with similar passions reside, this could be Medium, LinkedIn, a personal blog, podcasts, or through public speaking engagements. It could also be via shorter communications, email, Slack channels, or other internal organizational communications you have available to you. Share your knowledge, help others, and connect people that might drive collaborative progress toward something you want to change or impact positively. Engagement: Engage with others, join in discussions, and be open to feedback. This not only strengthens your brand but also makes it dynamic and evolving. As I discussed, once I knew I had established a brand maybe 15 years ago, it has continued to evolve. Evolution: Just as you grow and change, so should your personal brand. Regularly reflect upon and update your narrative to ensure it's relevant and reflective of your current self. In essence, a personal brand is a powerful tool in today's interconnected world. Your career narrative, when infused with authenticity and purpose, tells the world not only who you are but also what they can expect when they engage with you. It will repel people who are not for you and will draw others who strongly desire to align with you – they will know you are their kind of people – it’s like a beacon, a Bat Signal, for others who want to work with you to solve those really hard problems. Not everyone is going to like you – and that’s ok. Builds Authentic Connections: People resonate with stories. When you share yours, you form genuine connections, paving the way for collaborations and opportunities. Creates Opportunities: Once people understand your journey, they’re more likely to see where you could fit in the bigger picture of their own projects and organizations. Activity -- Craft your own career narrative: Deep-Dive Reflection and List: Dive deep into your past. Jot down all significant moments, challenges, achievements, and turning points. Remember, no detail is too small! Identify Core Themes: Look for patterns in your journey. What themes emerge? Resilience, innovation, leadership? These are the core pillars of your story. Define your Value Proposition: What do you bring to the table, what are your skills, interests, what is the impact you are capable of making? Craft Your Story: Start weaving your experiences around these themes. Create a compelling narrative, a story with a beginning, middle, and where you are now. Where do you want to go in the future? 5, 10, 15 years from now? Seek Feedback: Share your story with close friends or mentors. Their insights can offer valuable refinements. Continued evolution – adjust and update as you grow and change across time "Now, once you have this powerful narrative, how do you use it?" Networking: Whether it's a formal networking event, a coffee chat, or a virtual meet-up, sharing your story helps people remember you. Job Interviews: Your narrative sets you apart from other candidates, showcasing not just your skills but your journey and growth. Mentoring: When guiding others, sharing your journey provides real-world context, making your advice more relatable. Public Speaking and Writing: Use your narrative to connect with your audience, whether you’re giving a talk, writing an article, or being interviewed. Conclusion Your career narrative is a dynamic tool that will evolve as you do. It’s not just a static story but a reflection of your journey, values, and vision. Use it to guide decisions, connect with others, and advance in your career. Remember, it’s uniquely yours. Own it, cherish it, and share it.
