Barry first found music when he borrowed his sister's record collection when he was about eight and was hooked. When Caroline started it was a new beginning, and he listened to all the stations, but Caroline was his favourite by far. Later he became a singer in a band, then started doing discos when he was 18. “I’m Rooting for Everybody Black” has become a bit of a rallying cry to indicate our unwavering support for Black creatives, entrepreneurs, techies — anybody that’s repping Black excellence. But the expectation that “Everybody Black” deserves our support can also be an errant one.
The death of OJ Simpson brings this topic into greater focus, and it’s worth taking another look at this age-old question in light of what his ascent and downfall meant to the Black community.
Are we required to lend our unquestioned support to Black folks simply because they’re “our” people? When is it okay to withdraw our support from Black folks that we deem problematic, and why is this so hard to talk about?
