South-London RnB songstress Kemi Ade came out of the womb knowing she'd be making music - and making music she is!
Fresh off the back of her new release, the second instalment of her double EP project, 'Drive - Dusk Edition', Kemi has been praised by the likes of Complex, Notion and Guap, with this release showcasing her songwriting and vocal muscles. An accomplished songwriter behind-the-scenes, 'Drive - Dusk Edition' was written after a year long hiatus that saw Kemi work as a songwriter for artists such as BSHP & Rebecca Garton. Now re-focusing on herself as an artist, Kemi is back, creating music that weaves elements of 90s synths, jazz, soul and R&B into a sound that is distinctly her own, putting her into the position as one of the UK’s top R&B voices.
In this episode we speak about the decisions behind her latest release, confidence vs arrogance as a woman in the industry, and imagination and songwriting.

×Happy (almost) Easter, you! And YES, you do deserve a treat. We may not have chocolate but we do have the darling Uma - and we think you might just fall in love with her, as we did. Born in Catalonia to a British mother and Thai father, Uma’s upbringing filled was filled with travel and cultural encounters that have inspired chords of empathy, and the affinity to those around her bleeds naturally into her music. With a background in classical violin training and later a degree at the University of York, Uma has continued grow in confidence, signing to Slow Dance Records and being spotted by taste maker Anthony Fantano . With an aspiration to continue creating with like-minded, young talent, Uma, with the help of Luke Bower (previous On Repeat guest, Lucy Lu ) set up a music residency entitled “Can Obert” in her house in Spain. Since then o ver twenty-five young artists and musicians, including Nilufer Yanya , Max Pope , and Amy May Ellis m have collaborated to create over twenty songs in a week, the community thriving in this Woodstock-like community-focused project. With inspirations such as Joni Mitchell, Buika, Ella Fitzgerald, Nico, Macy Gray, Bebel Gilberto, Shakira and Florence and the Machine, Uma has an unwavering sense of sincerity, and her passion towards the creative art of music, community and collaboration shines through in her work. This week our guests are the Bristol-based trio Elder Island, consisting of vocalist and cellist Katy Sargent, bassist and beat maestro Luke Thornton, and guitarist and synth master David Havard. The Elder Island sound is an effortless blend of diverse genre's. Mixing Electronica, Indie, Neo-Soul and Pop, Elder Island have carved out a distinct place in the musical landscape, distinctly creating a web of sound that threads poetic lyricism and unfamiliar instruments over a backdrop of electronic elements and synth-heavy dance beats. From South London to sunny Spain (he escaped prior to lockdown), our guest this week is producer and artist, Lucy Lu , AKA Luke Bower. With Lucy Lu the ambiguous name of Luke's shape shifting project, Luke effortlessly moves between solo work and collaborative sessions with an 11-strong band. Alongside this, Luke also works collaboratively with the likes of partner Uma - check out the gorgeous Black Bees - and self-confessed confidante Puma Blue ( check out his ep here ). Growing up amongst London’s rich ecosystem of diverse music scenes Luke's sound developed - amongst the line up for Lucy's first outing were Ms MAURICE and Richie Seivwright of KOKOROKO , and he has since supported the likes of The Cat Empire and Loyle Carner . Weaving a jazz-flecked melodies with a mix of sounds, instruments and production 'trickery'. Luke has found the time to build up a reputation for Lucy Lu as one of the most exciting live acts in London, alongside touring as the bassist of On Repeat fave, Nilüfer Yanya . We're back with another fascinating conversations with Barney Whittakar, also known as Footshooter. Footshooter a London based producer, DJ and musician and style blends skippy, broken beats with atmospheric warmth from synths, keys and guitars, combining programming with live instrumentation to create an organic, rich sound. He frequently collaborates with MCs, poets and vocalists exploring different tones and moods. In this episode, we touch upon how the work Barney undertakes with In House Records and how it influences his own music. We also talk about collaboration and creative process during lockdown and how he is preparing for his upcoming gig - the first lockdown times. Footshooter has performed live DJ sets in support of the likes of Yussef Kamaal , Vels Trio and Alfa Mist , as well as performing regularly at south-east London night STEEZ and Brainchild Festival and has also collaborated with the likes of On Repeat favourites, Poppy Ajudha and Brother Portrait ( Steamdown ). His 2018 release with YAM Recordings ‘Technicolour Nights’, was met with critical acclaim, gaining plays on BBC 6 Music by Gilles Peterson, as well as regular spins on Tim Garcia's Jazz FM show, Musica Macondo. This week we welcome Puma Blue to the On Repeat stage! This week expect cosmic conversations and musical mystery, to discussing being on stage vs live stream culture, we enter the rich, dreamy world of singer/songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Puma Blue, AKA Jacob Allen . _____ Puma Blue’s music has been described as 'voicemail ballads' and a union between J Dilla influenced grooves with pure silky vocals similar to that of Chet Baker . Inspired by an eclectic mix with the likes of Jeff Buckley , D’Angelo , Björk and Radiohead . Jacob produces his unmistakable low fi music in his bedroom in South London. Steadily honing his craft since 2014, where he first released an EP on Soundcloud, and has since gone on to lead to live shows around London with the Puma Blue band, toured Paris, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Seoul and Berlin and across the UK. This is all amongst independently releasing debut EP ‘Swum Baby’, two stand-alone singles on the Blue Flowers label, and a second EP ‘Blood Loss’.
