"I think therapy is treating medical necessity. It's textbook DSM. You're treating them for a diagnosis where coaching is working with those more situational, non clinical, less severe problems."

Carly Hill, a former social worker and therapist who has transitioned into a successful coaching business joins me today. Carly shares her story of discovering the power of coaching and how she has been able to impact more lives by leveraging her clinical expertise. Carly has a unique background, having started out as a social worker and then moving into therapy, specializing in areas like play therapy and neurofeedback. Along the way, she became interested in alternative modalities like Reiki and NLP, and realized she was already doing a lot of coaching work with her clients. This led her to dive deeper into the world of coaching and create her own successful coaching business.

During the interview, Carly breaks down the key differences between therapy and coaching, explaining that therapy is focused on treating medical necessity and diagnosable issues, while coaching addresses more situational, non-clinical problems. She also shares the common barriers that therapists face when trying to transition into coaching, such as concerns about protecting their license, and provides practical advice on how to navigate this ethically and legally.

"Anybody who's listening right now, I'm taking my hand and I'm placing it over your head and I'm deeming you as a coach right now, like, go try it on, go try on the identity as a coach and see how it feels."

Carly's business model for therapist-turned-coaches is particularly intriguing. She recommends a hybrid approach that includes a recorded course, group coaching calls, and added support through channels like a private Facebook group. This allows therapists to leverage their time and expertise to impact more clients, while still maintaining the personal touch that clients crave. If you're a therapist who is considering adding coaching to your practice or are simply curious about the intersection of these two fields, this episode is for you. Carly's insights and practical advice could be the catalyst you need to take the next step in your career and help even more people transform their lives.
