Main Segment: Nutrition for Vitality - Breaking Free from Unhealthy Eating Habits

  • This month’s theme centers on vitality, focusing on both the physical and mental aspects. Vitality means feeling alive, energetic, and capable.

According to the University of Pennsylvania, the word "vitality" comes from "vita," meaning life, and reflects a state where both body and mind are full of purpose and energy.

Quote of the Week:
“I have a duty to do work that impacts the lived experiences of people who look like me.”
– Yabba Blay, Creative Producer & Native Ethnographer

This quote resonates with my journey of growing up in a single-parent household. It has informed my commitment to making an impact through wellness and food advocacy.

Personal Journey:

  • Growing up, my family faced financial constraints and food access challenges. Living in a food desert, we relied on meals from places like McDonald’s or KFC, while school meals were slightly healthier. However, the reliance on processed, high-sugar, and high-fat foods left me feeling lethargic and hungry.
    • Mindset: There was zero awareness of nutrition, and I prioritized convenience over health.
    • Impact: It wasn’t until I entered college, where I had more diverse food options, that I started realizing the importance of nutrition.

Takeaways:

  • Environments can normalize unhealthy eating habits, whether through lack of access or cultural norms.
  • Proper nutrition can shift how you see yourself and your potential.
  • The more aware I became of my diet’s impact on my energy, mental clarity, and health, the more I prioritized healthier choices and became motivated to help others do the same.
  • Visit The Grocery Spot to help low income communities access healthy foods!
  • Click here to learn more about how your diet affects your mood.
